Chavez Jr. wants Gennady Golovkin clash

chavez91By Dan Ambrose: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is hoping he can get WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) to move up to 168 and face him in the super middleweight division, because Chavez Jr. thinks he’s got the skills to beat the powerful Golovkin.

The son of the legendary fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. thinks he’ll knock Golovkin out if the fight gets put together. I’m not sure if Chavez Jr. can do that because he doesn’t have any solid knockout wins over good opposition on his resume that would suggest that he could knockout someone like Golovkin.

Hearn: Barker can face Golovkin once he wins IBF title

barker2By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn says he wouldn’t mind putting his fighter Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) in with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) if he can beat IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) next month in their fight on August 17th at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn said to I Film London “Barker is going to own the IBF title then he can think about Golovkin, but he’s definitely not a fighter I’ll be cueing up to take on Darren Barker. Felix Sturm’s a lot easier than Gennady Golovkin.”

Martin Murray complains of visa problems; Golovkin fight not likely

murray66By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA, Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) says he has visa problems at the moment that he needs to take care of before he can start thinking about facing the likes of talented WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s).

Golovkin’s manager is interested in putting a fight together between Golovkin at the #1 WBA, Martin Murray for November in a fight that would be televised by HBO, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unless Murray can take care of his visa problems.

Murray said in an interview with Livefight, “I’ve not been told of an offer. A date of November 2 is the first I’ve heard. I’ve not been told anything. If they said they want to fight me then that’s fair enough but I’ve still got visa issues to sort out…he’s not fought anyone like myself. That’s when you’ll see the best of me.”

Macklin to be back on HBO in November

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: Fringe middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) says he’ll be back in the ring fighting in November on HBO against an opponent still to be determined. Macklin, #11 WBA, was stopped in the 3rd round last Saturday night by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

This was Macklin’s third defeat in his last four fights, and he’s kicking himself for using the wrong strategy against the hard hitting Golovkin.

Macklin feels that it would have had more of a chance to beat Golovkin if he had gone straight at him in the 1st round and thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him.

Can Golovkin and Rigondeaux become huge draws like Floyd Mayweather Jr?

rigondeaux64By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night we all got the chance to see a beautiful knockout, a left hook to the body that was brilliantly prepared and executed by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) in knocking out Matthew Macklin. Oh, the drama of the fallen contender screaming in pain was something to remember.

Once, a long time ago, Roy Jones Jr. knocked out hall of fame member Virgil Hill, but I believe it was a hook to the body delivered with the right hand that broke a rib and the pain of Hill was as dramatic as Golovkin´s.

Golovkin has evolved into a fearful middleweight champion; he has polished his boxing skills and packs a hammer on both of his hands. But is he ready to headline a pay per view event?

Golovkin and the need for rivalries

golovkin53By Jose Muradas: Boxing needs mega-rivalries that will bring a buzz back to the sport. It’s time for boxing to  knock MMA on it’s backside. We know that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will never happen. Pacquiao  looks to be on the downside of his career, Marquez is one fight away from retirement. Once Mayweather leaves the star power in boxing is gone.

My suggestion is  to start building new rivalries now. Now is the time for boxing  to start making the fights that will create those rivalries. The fighter at the center of it all: Gennady Golovkin. He is a machine, and reminds me of a young Roberto Duran. He can box, he can punch, and oh my, can he punch!  He will fight anybody in his division, he shows no fear, and he is must see boxing. Fighters, such as Canelo Alvarez, Carl Froch, and Peter Quillin, would make for heated rivalries.

Punch Out Weekly

Canelo and Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Peart Miles: Hello readers of Boxing news 24, in this weeks edition of Punch Out weekly I will be discussing the fallout from Gennady Golovkin vs. Mathew Macklin, Froch vs Groves? And other big news and events from the past week in the boxing world.

Hello GGG

I will be completely honest, I wasn’t sure about Golovkin as I only seen him box Gabriel Rosado back in January and the YouTube clip of him facing Andre Dirrell in the 2004 Olympics. But after watching he’s performance against Macklin I can say,  Golovkin put on a fantastic show, solidifying himself as one of the must watch boxers in the game. It wasn’t just the power which stood out for me it was also the  fantastic footwork and balance, he’s confidence in the ring was also great. There wasn’t anything Macklin could do which could make Golovkin think twice before coming forward.

Golovkin wants Martin Murray fight on November 2nd

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovin (27-0, 24 KO’s) is interested in facing Britain’s #1 WBA, #5 WBC, #10 IBF, Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) next, according to Sky Sports. Unfortunately, there reportedly hasn’t been any word from Murray’s team whether they want that fight.

Additionally, there are questions whether Murray could get a visa to travel to the U.S if he were to agree to the fight. Obviously, Golovkin isn’t going to travel to the UK just to fight one of his contenders.

HBO wants to televise Golovkin’s next fight, but I’m not so certain they’d be keen on the idea of taking their entire crew to the UK for a Golovkin-Murray fight. It’s probably not a big enough of a fight for that kind of expense and ordeal.

Golovkin moves to #1 in Ring ratings at 160

golovkin122By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) moved from #2, behind Daniel Geale, to #1 in the Ring ratings after Golovkin’s 3rd round knockout win over Matthew Macklin last Saturday night. Geale slides down to the #2 spot in the ratings.

The current Ring champion is WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. That’s a rating that probably needs to be adjusted, though, because a lot has changed since Martinez’s win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last September, as Martinez looked poor in his first bout since that fight against Martin Murray last April.

Martinez was lucky to get the win in that fight, and you can’t deny that he’s starting to show his age in a big way with the injuries and lack of power.

Golovkin-Macklin draws 1.1 million viewers on HBO

golovkin433By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s 3rd round knockout win over Matthew Macklin last Saturday night was seen by 1.1 million viewers on HBO, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. These numbers were up considerably from Golovkin’s fight against Gabriel Rosado, which brought in 813,000 viewers on HBO in January and the 685 thousand that saw Golovkin’s fight against Grzegorz Proksa last year in September.

What’s unclear is whether Golovkin’s huge increase from the Rosado fight was due to Golovkin gaining more fans or because of Macklin’s large Irish fan base tuning in from the East coast to watch him fight. Rafael points out that HBO put more time and effort into marketing the Golovkin vs. Macklin fight, and that could also explain the better numbers.
