Today’s Duran vs. Leonard: Golovkin vs. Stevens

golovkin43On June 20th 1980, boxing fans were treated to what would be the beginning of a legendary rivalry by two of the most revered boxers of all-time. Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran treated the world to a fight no one would soon forget. For 15 rounds, the two traded and exchanged punches, combinations, and wits with the goal of proving their dominance in the sport.

Each man wanted to leave behind a legacy. Sugar looked to prove that he could stand toe to toe con las “Manos de Piedras” to show the world that he is not just a defensive and elusive boxer with a nice smile. Roberto Duran on the other hand, looked to break Leonard down and punish him to submission. Duran wanted to prove that he was the best in the world. On that night, Duran and Sugar gave fight fans a display of ruthless aggression and determination that would last a lifetime.

Sanchez: Golovkin to showcase his talent against Stevens this Saturday

bengggabel102813(Photo credit: K2 Promotions) By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) will be defending his title against the much shorter 5’7″ Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO’s) this Saturday night on HBO at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. The fight has been advertised as being a competitive one, but for those fans who’ve seen Steven’s previous losses to Andre Dirrell and Jesse Brinkley in the past.

All they had to do was box the shorter-armed Stevens from the outside and he was helpless. The fights where Stevens has found success has been against guys that were willing to let him get close enough to throw his shots, and even then Stevens still has never beaten a good fighter before. It’s been largely 2nd and 3rd tier opposition.

Only three men have gone the distance with Golovkin, will Stevens be another KO victim?

stevens3By @BoxingMuse: November the 2nd sees ‘GGG’ meet Brownsville, Brooklyn’s Curtis ‘Showtime’ Stevens. In 27 professional fights prior to this exciting match up only three men have heard the final bell when facing middleweight punching sensation Gennady Golovkin.

The first man to last the distance in 2007 was an Algerian by the name of Mehdi Bouadla who was also halted by two former world champions in Arthur Abraham and Mikkel Kessler.

Secondly was Ian Gardner in 2008 a Canadian boxer who was previously stopped by ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson & lost points decisions to Peter Manfredo Jr and Arthur Abraham.

Fans want Mayweather to fight Golovkin

floyd#11By Allan Fox: In a poll at RingtTV, Boxing fans were asked who they wanted Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight next if they were to exclude Manny Pacquiao, and surprisingly most of the fans picked WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at 23.9 percent. The next fighter that fans showed interest in Mayweather fighting was Sergio Martinez at 21.9 percent.

It’s interesting to note that fans want to see Mayweather move up to 160 to fight monster punchers like Golovkin and Martinez because there are quite a few interesting bouts at 140 and 147 that you would think fans would also be interested in. It seems that fans feel that the only way that Mayweather’s opponents have any chance of beating him is if they pick out fighters from the middleweight, super middleweight and eve light heavyweight divisions.

Froch targeting Golovkin and Chavez Jr.

froch4534By Sean McDaniel: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) has a tough title defense ahead of him next month against George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) on November 23rd, but if Froch can successfully win that fight and get out of it in one piece, he’d like to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after that. Froch is open to fighting Golovkin at a catch-weight because he can’t get down to 160 due to his size, and he wouldn’t expect the shorter 5’10” Golovkin to come up all the way to 168 to make the fight happen.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport is very interested in putting together the Froch-Golovkin fight if possible after the Groves fight. Hearn would like to bring Golovkin over to the UK to stage the fight, and he sees it as a pay-per-view caliber bout in the UK.

Curtis Stevens talks about upcoming world title fight against Gennady Golovkin

stevens22By Ian Aldous: On Saturday November 2nd, Curtis ‘Kryptonite’ Stevens (25-3) steps up to the plate to challenge Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (27-0) for his WBA and IBO world middleweight titles at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, live on HBO. The chance to make himself a true player in the division and pound-for-pound rankings lay ahead if he can pull off the win. Last week Ellen Haley of Main Events kindly mediated an interview with Curtis on my behalf.

As things stand Golovkin is one of the hottest properties in the sport and justifiably so. Undefeated with twenty-four knockouts in his twenty-seven wins shows that he could prove to be the toughest test a fighter can face – elite amateur pedigree and devastating knockout power. “He’s a great fighter overall I believe. I don’t think it is as much as people are saying it is (his power). He has power but the power they say he possesses, no. If that was the case, he would have more first round knockouts.

Golovkin vs. Ward – Unstoppable Force vs. Immovable Object

ward123By Iggy Chowdhury – This is simply a fight that must happen because no one else really wants to fight either of these fighters albeit for different reasons. Below I assess the two boxers and how they would fare against each other.

Gennady Golovkin – This guy is the real deal. The way he stalks his opponent and cuts down the ring with intelligent diagonal steps is just pure ring intelligence and makes for a claustrophobic fight for whoever steps in the ring with him. Add to that his ability to punch with concussive power using either hand and a jab that feels like a straight.

Golovkin’s chin is rarely tested because his movement in and out of range is so very good that his opponents are always a few millimeters short of landing and the times when he has been caught he barely bats an eyelid. Then there is perhaps the scariest aspect of this unique boxer; his calm, ice cold, emotionless expression, it is as though he is not even in a fight but standing in line at the bank waiting, in his case waiting to land that knockout blow.

Hearn: Golovkin isn’t keen on fighting Froch

froch55By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says that he’d match his fighter IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) if Golovkin would agree to the fight.

Hearn says he would make that Froch’s next fight if Groves would say yes to it, and Hearn thinks it has the potential of being a pay-per-view fight in the UK as well as the United States.

Fighting Fair

golovkin43By Isaac Brodie: I wrote an article discussing the merits of a match up between Sergio Martinez and Manny Pacquiao. A lot of the criticism it received was based on the size difference. I don’t disagree with that point. Manny is significantly smaller so would be at an immediate disadvantage.

My point was that at this point the Pac-Man will need to do something drastic to get back into striking range of the pound for pound title.

This then got me thinking, if we we’re to ignore boxing politics, what would be the best match ups to be made? I’ve tried to come up with a list of truly even match-ups, not just match-ups that could be made out to look even in the hype.

1. Amir Khan Vs. Timothy Bradley
