Will Cotto or Canelo fight Golovkin next?

golovkin45By Cameron Gillon: Last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City America, power punching Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) made short work of Australia’s Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) to retain his WBA and IBO middleweight world titles in a 3rd round knockout. I myself made a prediction of a 8th or 9th round KO for Golovkin.

I don’t think many thought he would win the fight that quickly as some thought that Geale was a bit of a step up to the type of opposition Golovkin has faced, but it’s not 16 fights in a row that Gennady Golovkin has won by the way of knockout or a referee stopping the fight taking the run all the way back to 2009. Straight after the win Golovkin was interviews by HBO commentator Max Kellerman and when asked who he would like to face next, he said he would like a unification fight against the other champions in Peter Quillin, Sam Soliman or Miguel Cotto but the name that stood out was Cotto.

Gennady Golovkin: Between a rock and hard place

golovkin7356By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: WBA middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin (GGG) is a cross between former middleweight champ Marvin Hagler and former junior middleweight champ Mike McCallum. McCallum was the number one challenger to Roberto Duran’s WBA belt, but was passed over by Duran for a more lucrative fight with Thomas Hearns.

McCallum eventually won the title and made 9 defenses before meeting known fighters Milton McCrory and Donald Curry. He won both by knockout. Hagler had a hard time landing a title shot until he finally received one against Vito Antoufermo. That bout ended in a draw. Hagler got another crack at the title in England when he stopped Alan Minter. The victory was short lived as Hagler was greeted with beer bottles while celebrating in the ring.

Golovkin – Brutal Economy

golovkin3255By Daniel Hughes: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) certainly showed last night against Daniel Geale (30-3, 16ko’s) why he is now widely recognized as the best 160lb fighter on the planet with his dismantling of the durable, experienced ex-champion, Geale.

The Australian challenger for me by a level, the best opponent Golovkin has faced in the pro ranks. Golovkin to many hadn’t faced a real genuine contender yet in the middleweight division, Geale was certainly that.

Froch doesn’t want to fight Golovkin?

golovkin111By Scott Gilfoid: Last night HBO displayed a quote from IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch in which he said that he wanted no part of fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs), and that he’s someone that should be avoided or steered around.

HBO commentator Max Kellerman tried to see the comment in a positive light by saying that Froch may have meant that he would avoid mixing it up with him if he actually fought him, but he wasn’t quite sure if that’s what he meant or not.

Golovkin: I want Cotto next!

golovkin1By Chris Williams: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) called out WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) tonight after Golovin’s 3rd round destruction of his 17th knockout victim Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

After depositing a bleeding and beaten Geale on the canvas in the 3rd round courtesy of a fight hand to the head, Golovkin told Max Kellerman of HBO “Miguel Cotto. I respect his style. This is big event for boxing. I want unification fight. A lot of champions Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin.”

Geale would still beat Cotto

gealeBy Bob Smith: I honestly felt bad for Daniel Geale when he decided to take the fight with Golovkin – this is the first time he would appear on the biggest of possible stages (with the exception of the MGM Grand) and he would not be given the credit he deserves as a fighter due to being obliterated by Golovkin.

I actually thought Geale would do better, and use movement to frustrate and tag Golovkin, which he did his best to do, but Golovkin got his KO in the 3rd round instead of the 8th or 9th as I expected.

How did Daniel Geale get knocked out so quickly? Well, the simple fact is that Golovkin packs heavyweight punching power in the middleweight division. It is worthwhile to let that fact sink in – so when there is an exchange and he gets tagged and Golovkin comes back with a fast counter, this is what happens. Again, I suspected that Daniel Geale would try to engage Golovkin at times, but even I didn’t expect the fight to end so quickly.

Golovkin crushes Geale; Jennings decisions Perez

golovkin2By Jim Dower: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) destroyed challenger former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KO’s) in a 3rd round knockout on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin knocked Geale down twice in the fight, once in the 2nd and the final time in the 3rd round. Golovkin finished Geale with a right to the head in the 3rd that put him down on his back. Geale got back on his feet but the referee Mike Ortega stopped it due to him being too hurt. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:44 of the 3rd round.

Golovkin a potential opponent for Cotto in December

golovkin6666(Photo credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) has a lot on the line tonight in his fight against Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s). There’s a potential huge pay-per-view fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) that could take place next December on HBO if Golovkin looks good in dealing with the Australian Geale.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach will be at tonight’s fight at MSG, getting a good look at Golovkin first hand to decide whether he’s good enough to put in the ring with Cotto. Roach has a lot of sway over Cotto, and it’s quite possible he could talk him into facing Golovkin next if Roach likes what he sees of him. Roach can also talk Cotto out of talking the fight if he feels that he’s all wrong for him.

Golovkin-Geale winner could face Soliman next

golovkin63By Scott Gilfoid: IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman (44-11, 18 KOs) will be watching tonight’s fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) and Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) with great interest because he’s hoping to get the winner of the fight to face him later this year in a unification match.

Soliman has had easier title-milking fights offered to him against Andy Lee, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray, but he wants to face the best in the winner of the Golovkin vs. Geale fight.

“I’ve had offers to fight Andy Lee in Ireland…I’ve had interest from Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray in the UK. I’ve been offered plenty of easy fights but I’m 40 now and I only want the really big fights at the end of my career,” Soliman said. “The biggest fight for me is to unify the world titles against Geale-Golovkin winner.”

Golovkin’s trainer says Andre Ward a possibility if he understands his place

ward333By Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs), says a fight between Golovkin and WBA 168 pound champ Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) is a realistic option in the future, but only if Ward understands who the top guy is in this fight. In other words, who the A-side money guy is and that’s obviously Golovkin, in Sanchez’s eyes.

Sanchez said “We are ready to fight Andre Ward, but only if he will understand that Gennady is a bigger star, bigger draw.”
