Rubio will need his A-game to be competitive with Golovkin

golovkinBy Dan Ambrose: WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) believes he’s got a good chance of knocking out WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) in their fight next month on October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Unfortunately for Rubio, few boxing fans and writers are giving him a shot at knocking Golovkin out or beating him by a decision. It’s not that Rubio doesn’t have the punching power to KO Golovkin in theory. It’s just that Rubio is going to have huge problems in taking the punishment that Golovkin will be dishing out.

Rubio has a good chin, as we saw in his 7th round stoppage win over the hard hitting David Lemieux in 2011. Rubio took terrible punishment in the first 5 rounds of that fight before taking over in the 6th round when Lemieux gassed out completely. But the reality is that if Lemieux hadn’t gassed out then it’s very likely that Rubio would have been finished by the 8th round.

He wouldn’t take another 3-4 rounds of the kind of punishment that Lemieux was dishing out in that fight, and it wasn’t competitive at all until Lemieux got tired. Before that, it was like Lemieux working on a heavy bag in nailing Rubio with punch after punch.

Cotto vs. Golovkin: my dream fight

golovkin7356By Bob Smith: Though it is almost certainly the case that Cotto will fight Canelo next May, with or without a tune up fight, many boxing fans want to see who truly is the best in the middleweight division. Perhaps Cotto’s decision not to face Golovkin is due to financial reasons; perhaps at this point in his career he feels he has nothing to prove – and as the first four division Puerto Rican champion why would he?

But perhaps also he is aware that Martinez was slipping or shot by the time that he fought Martinez, so his title is less than legitimate, and so he wants to avoid fighting a true middleweight until his cash out fight.

Edwin Rodriguez vs. Azea Augustama on Golovkin-Rubio card on October 18th

rodriguez432By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Edwin Rodriguez (24-1, 16 KOs) will be back in the ring next month against light heavyweight Azea Augustama (17-1, 9 KOs) on October 18th on the undercard of the Marco Antonio Rubio vs. Gennady Golovkin fight card at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Rodriguez, 29, hasn’t fought since last November when he was soundly beaten by WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision. Rodriguez tried as hard as he could against Ward, but he just didn’t have the talent to compete in that fight.

Kellerman: Golovkin needs Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather to become a PPV fighter

golovkin99999By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Max Kellerman said what many boxing fans already knew last Wednesday night when he said that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) needs one of the big names – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to agree to fight Golovkin before he can become a pay-per-view seller in his own right.

It’s not enough right now that Golovkin is knocking out everyone he faces dating back to 2009. He needs to get a scalp from the like of Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather for him to get to the next level.

Groves gains confidence from sparring session with Golovkin

groves6998By Scott Gilfoid: Former two time world title challenger George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) says he gained a ton of confidence from his sparring session with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last July.

Groves sparred a little with Golovkin to get him ready for his title defense against Daniel Geale on July 26th, and Groves claims he did well during the sparring session. Groves didn’t say who got the better of who or if he was injured or knocked down during the session, but evidently Groves came away the sparring session with confidence that he still has it after his back to back knockout losses to IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

Quillin: Golovkin vacated his WBA title, Jacobs has the WBA belt

quillin52By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin is claiming that the reason why the World Boxing Association made Gennady Golovkin the WBA Super World champion was because Golovkin failed to fight Jarrod Fletcher.

Quillin seems to have his mind made up that Daniel Jacobs is the main WBA middleweight champion and Golovkin was made the WBA Supper World champ only because he didn’t fight Fletcher.

The WBA elevated Golovkin to Super World champion last June. The previous WBA Super Champion Daniel Geale was stripped of that status by the WBA in October of 2012 after he failed to fight Golovkin, who was the WBA regular middleweight champion at the time. Geale wanted to fight Anthony Mundine rather than face Golovkin. But for some reason the WBA didn’t give Golovkin the Super World WBA status until June of 2014.

No offers made to Golovkin

golovkin66By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Before I get started, I want to point out that I’m a big Andre Ward fan as my main focus will be on him. I enjoy watching him fight. I’m not that big of fan of Gennady Golovkin (GGG), but I highly respect him in what he’s trying to accomplish. But there are few misconceptions about Golovkin being offered big fights.

I’m not here to talk about fighters resumes, but rather who has offered what. There is a difference between saying “I want to fight” someone and actually placing a deal on the table. The former has happened, but the latter has not. Indeed, Carl Froch and his promoter, Eddie Hearn had expressed a fight with GGG, but no formal contract was offered.
