Oquendo hoping to get Deontay Wilder fight on Mayweather undercard on May 3rd

deontay899By Scott Gilfoid: Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) is expected to fight next on May 3rd on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight at the MGM Grand on Las Vega, Nevada. Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t have an opponent for the 6’7″ knockout artist, but 40-year-old Fres Oquendo (36-7, 23 KO’s) is hoping to get the fight, according to Fightnews.

Oquendo, #6 WBA, #12 WBC, would be a nice scalp for Deontay to add to his collection if he could get that fight, because Oquendo has been in with a lot of big named fighters during his long 17-year pro career.

Roach to watch Pacquiao closely in training camp for signs of deterioration

pac004By Chris Williams: Freddie Roach, the trainer for the recently KO’d Manny Pacquiao, says he’s going to be monitoring the Filipino closely in his next training camp to see if he’s suffering the after effects from his 6th round knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez last December.

Pacquiao was knocked completely out by a right hand from Marquez in the 6th, and the shot sent Pacquiao down face first.

Roach said to the latimes.com “he [Pacquiao] says he’s fine and I believe him. There are things I will be looking for in our next training camp. First, it is the footwork. I will be able to tell if he starts feeling for the canvas…I’ll look for any slight tremors.”

Oquendo not in the running for Wladimir’s next fight on April 6th

wladimir#7By Dan Ambrose: 39-year-old Fres Oquendo (35-7, 23 KO’s) is not under consideration for IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s next fight on April 6th, according to Dan Rafael. There’s been a lot of talk around the boxing world for the past day about Wladimir choosing Oquendo to fight for his optional title defense. Rafael says he spoke to the Klitschko camp and they shot down the idea of a Wladimir-Oquendo fight.

This would have been Oquendo’s third title challenge, as he fought IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd in September 2003, and lost a controversial 12 round unanimous decision. The next year, Oquendo fought WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz in April 2004, and was halted in the 11th round.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Fres Oquendo possible for April 6th in Hanover

wlad234By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50 KO’s) is rumored to be facing #5 WBA, #12 WBC, Fres Oquendo (35-7, 23 KO’s) on April 6th in Hanover, Germany in an optional title defense for Wladimir. He was ordered by the World Boxing Association to defend his title against WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, but Wladimir asked and was given permission by the WBA to squeeze in an optional title defense before the Povetkin fight.

If Wladimir faces Oquendo rather than a younger, arguably more talented heavyweight, it will give some boxing fans the impression that Wladimir is just milking his titles at this point in his career. Wladimir has had it really easy since his unification fight against David Haye two years ago. Since that fight, Wladimir has beaten 39-year-old Jean Marc Mormeck, 40-year-old Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach.
