Mayweather vs. Berto: Expect an exciting fight on September 12th

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Babatis Banda: Even for me, a staunch Floyd Mayweather Jr. supporter, the news came as a surprise that Mayweather Jr. will be fighting Andre Berto on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. I never dreamt Berto would be in Mayweather’s radar at any given time despite having been a world champion once, and carrying only three losses to his record.

Berto was disfigured, if not maimed by one of Floyd Mayweather’s victims, Robert Guerrero. He also lost to Victor Ortiz who was clearly out boxed and frustrated by Mayweather’s boxing smarts until he decided to foul Floyd for possibly an easier way out.

Mayweather vs. Berto makes business sense

floyd36By Michael Gill: For over a couple of months now, the boxing public had awaited the latest name of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. lottery. For months, Floyd had hinted that he was eyeing Andre Berto as his next opponent, to many this was just Floyd playing the media, for we would all expect for him to name a legitimate contender.

The joke was on us, Floyd was serious about facing Berto on September 12th. Both the public and boxing media have all protested their displeasure with the decision. Many of which, have declared this decision has being one that will tarnish Floyd’s legacy, especially “if” Floyd is to retire after his bout with Berto.

Berto: The hate will fuel me until September 12th

floyd777By Allan Fox: Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) couldn’t help but notice a lot of the criticism of him from boxing fans today after the news was released about him fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 12th on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. A lot of fans are deeply disappointed in Mayweather’s selection of Berto, as they don’t see him as having earned the fight.

It reflects badly on Mayweather for picking a fighter as poor as Berto. Fans wanted to see Mayweather select someone like Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, Kell Brook or Keith Thurman. However, Berto says he’s going to use the hate from fans as motivation to bring him to victory.

Badou Jack defends against George Groves on Mayweather-Berto card

groves95By Scott Gilfoid: As expected, WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (19-1-1, 12 KOs) and challenger George Groves (21-2, 16 KOs) have been added to help beef up the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Andre Berto card on September 12th on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Jack vs. Groves fight is one that you can argue shouldn’t even be happening. I mean, Groves got whipped twice by former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch not long ago in 2013 and 2014. Like all fighters that get knocked out twice in a row, Groves should have gone to the back of the line and worked his way back to a position where he could fight for a world title.

Andre Berto: I’m coming to kick Mayweather’s backside on September 12th

floyd6666By Chris Williams: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) doesn’t see himself as another notch on Floyd Mayweather Jr’s belt in their just announced pay-per-view fight on Showtime on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Berto has rejuvenated with the help of his genius trainer Virgil Hunter, and he’s coming to beat Mayweather’s behind in front of the whole world when he gets himself in the ring. I don’t know if Berto can do that, but he’s going to try his best not to become victim number 49. That’s the number that Mayweather, with all his greatness, will be looking to achieve when he gets Berto inside the ring.

“I’m coming to kick Floyd’s ass on September 12,” said Berto. “Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I’m not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won’t be me. You don’t want to miss this.”

Atlas: I want to see Mayweather fight Golovkin

golovkin5By Dan Ambrose: ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to temporarily retire after his next fight in September. Atlas sees it as the same type of retirement that we previously saw from Mayweather in 2007, when he stepped away from the sport for two years after his win over Ricky Hatton and didn’t return to the ring until 2009. Atlas thinks that there’s no way that Mayweather will stay out of the game permanently after his fight on September 12th of this year.

When Mayweather does come back, he thinks he should face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) if he’s still unbeaten. Believe it or not, Atlas thinks Mayweather will out-box Golovkin when he returns from his mini-retirement.

Keith Thurman blows a gasket at Errol Spence’s name being mentioned

thurman4444By Dan Ambrose: WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) got heated during an interview on Saturday at the mere mention of undefeated No.8 WBA 147lb contender Errol Spence (17-0, 14 KOs), who many boxing fans see as the future of the welterweight division.

Thurman got heated when asked if he was going to fight the talented 25-year-old Spence. Instead of saying that he’ll fight him, Thurman suggested that Spence should fight the Top Rank promoted Diego Chaves or fight two other guys that he’s beaten during his career. Thurman then said that he would negotiate to fight Spence if he could get a guarantee that he if wins, he’ll get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Is Danny Garcia an option for Floyd Mayweather Jr?

EW5G6223(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Gerardo Granados: After dominating a past prime TV Analyst Paul Malignaggi the question left to answer is if Danny Garcia will face a real challenge at 147 on his next bout. It’s true that Garcia was able to stop Malignaggi on the ninth round and dominated the full fight but it is also true that boxing purist and hardcore fight fans cannot be surprised and only a few casual fans should be deluded to think that this was a significant victory for Garcia´s record.

Unarguably Garcia has a marketable name and has been fortunate to have influential promoters behind him so Danny with ease could get a shot at IBF welter belt holder Kell Brook or WBO welter belt holder Tim Bradley. Some Casual fans could believe Garcia is the second coming of Tito Trinidad or Wilfred Benitez but nothing is farther from the truth. Not the less Danny took a big check worth 1.2 million notes so it is obvious that smart matchmaking allows more than one boxer to face low risk high reward opposition without the need to prove that they are deserving of a million notes purse.

Thurman: I have the skills to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr

thurman4By Dan Ambrose: WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) said last Saturday night that he’s waiting and hoping to get a fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs). Thurman believes he’s got the talent to beat the 38-year-old Mayweather, and he just wants a shot at fighting him.

Thurman thinks that Mayweather should answer the question of whether or not he wants to face him inside the ring because he’s ready to take the fight with him whenever he offers it to him. Thurman thinks he’s got the talent to defeat Mayweather when the time comes for the two of them to face each other. I don’t believe Thurman has anywhere near the same kind of talent that Mayweather has going for him.
