David Lemieux vs. Fernando Guerrero on Stevenson-Fonfara card on May 24th at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada

lemieux4454By Scott Gilfoid: #8 IBF, #12 WBO, #15 WBC, middleweight contender David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KO’s) is getting bumped up a level in his competition by being matched up against former middleweight world title challenger Fernando Guerrero (26-2, 19 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on May 24th on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara headliner bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Lemieux, 25, suffered a couple of losses three years ago to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine when he attempted to step it up from the weak opposition that he’d been feasting on up until then. Following that loss, Lemieux’s management put him back on the diet of weak opposition, and not surprisingly he’s looking good again.

Lemieux vs. Guerrero & Lacy vs. Beterbiev on May 24th at Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada

lemieux334By Allan Fox: #10 IBF, #11 WBO, David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KO’s) will be back in the ring next month against 27-year-old former world title challenger Fernando Guerrero (26-2, 19 KO’s) in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds on the undercard of the title fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Lemieux is taking a considerable step up in class in taking this fight, as Guerrero can fight a little bit as he’s shown in the past with wins over Ossie Duran, Derrick Findley, Gabriel Rosado, Michael Walker, Jessie Nicklow, and Ishe Smith. Guerrero has run into problems in knockout losses to Grady Brewer and Peter Quillin. You have to wonder whether Guerrero’s ability to take a good shot has diminished since his loss to Quillin.

Quillin wants unification bout after Guerrero fight

quillin1(Tom Casino/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) is targeting the other 160 pound champions if he can get past challenger Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Quillin says he wants WBC champ Sergio Martinez, IBF champ Daniel Geale or WBA champ Gennady Golovkin. Of those three only Golovkin has serious interested in facing Quillin, but it’s highly unlikely that Quillin will say yes to this fight, even though he mentioned him as someone he’d be interested in facing.

Quillin has already had opportunities to fight Golovkin, but has instead looked for safer alternatives. Quillin has sparred with Golovkin in the past and the rumors are that Golovkin handled him pretty easily. It’s just sparring, of course, but when you get totally dominated in sparring it does suggest that there are some skill differences between the two of them.

Quillin-Guerrero: Peter faces a good puncher on February 9th in Brooklyn, New York

quillin52By Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) is facing a fairly tough test in his first defense of his title on February 9th against Fernando Guerrero (5-1, 19 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Guerrero, 26, presents a tough fight for the 29-year-old Quillin because Guerrero can really punch and he’s a dangerous fighter if you don’t have good defensive skills, and that just happens to be one of Quillin’s major flaws in his game.

Quillin won the World Boxing Organization title in his last fight against former champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam last October, Quillin had N’Dam down six times in the fight, but he took a lot of shots in the process of winning the fight.

Quiilin, 29, had been mentioned as facing former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, but that fight isn’t happening. Taylor-Quillin fight would have been a mismatch, and it’s a good thing that Golden Boy isn’t going with that, but Guerrero-Quillin is about the same.
