Hopkins wins big at “The Brawl on Broad Street”

By Sam Gregory: Tonight from the Liacouras Center at Temple University in Bernard Hopkins’ hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hopkins won a unanimous decision over Enrique Ornelas in a 12 round non-title bout in the light heavyweight division.

In the opening rounds of the fight Ornelas came out hard and fast against the former undisputed middleweight champion; Hopkins paced himself and landed punches with pinpoint accuracy. Hopkins was so slow and methodical with his punches in the first two rounds I couldn’t help but think Hopkins was holding back to give his hometown fans their money’s worth.

Hopkins faces Ornelas on Wednesday: Does anyone care?

hopkins323354By David Lahr: 44-year-old light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KO’s) will be fighting Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19 KO’s), a middleweight contender, on Wednesday night in what is in effect a tune-up bout at the Liacouras Center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although Hopkins says “This is not a tune-up,” it’s hard to see it any other way than that. I mean any time a fighter selects a non champion opponent, not one but two divisions lower than him in weight, it has to be seen as a tune-up or stay busy fight. What else can it be called?

Jones-Green, Hopkins-Ornelas: Will the Hopkins-Jones rematch be ruined in Australia?

hopkins34439By Peter Wells: Roy Jones Jr-Bernard Hopkins is already been set up for March 13th, and both fighters get ready for warm up fight on Wednesday. Bernard fights in his hometown of Philadelphia, while Jones goes down under to Australia for Danny Green’s IBO Cruiserweight title. Jones is going up in weight, but has done it before and that won’t affect him. Green is the toughest out of the two opponents and defiantly the most likely to cause an upset. Danny Green has been beaten 3 times although hasn’t lost since 2006 where he was out pointed by Anthony Mundine.

Hopkins: “I will become heavyweight champion in 2010”

hop43456346By William Mackay: 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KO’s) has lofty goals for 2010, saying in article at the New York Post, “I will become heavyweight champion in 2010.” However, with Hopkins’ advanced age, and his limited size, it seems unlikely that Hopkins will ever accomplish this goal. Hopkins has been out of action for the past 13 months since defeating Kelly Pavlik by a lopsided 12 round decision in October 2008. Hopkins will return to the ring on December 2nd to face middleweight contender Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19 KO’s) at the Liacouras Center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hopkins-Ornelas: Why Didn’t Bernard face a better Opponent for His Tune-Up?

hop66754448By Chris Williams: Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KO’s) will be fighting Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19 KO’s) in a tune-up bout on December 2nd at Liacouras Center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is a warm-up bout for the 44-year-old Hopkins so that he can get prepared for a bout next year against Roy Jones Jr. That fight will be a huge money maker for Hopkins and Jones. However, what gripes me is why of all fighters for Hopkins to choose from, he chose Ornelas. What is up with that? Frankly, I think Ornelas, 29, is a lame choice for a fighter like Hopkins. I don’t mind a fighter like Hopkins fighting a tune-up bout, because goodness knows he needs one.
