Steward, who trains IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion, recently was admitted to a Chicago hospital last September and subsequently had surgery on his stomach. It was reported that Steward was suffering from diverticulitis. He had been hospitalized ever since the surgery.

Besides training Wladimir, Steward was known for having worked with Lennox Lewis to make him a great star, as well as Gerald McClellan, James Toney, Michael Moorer, Thomas Hearns, Naseem Hamed, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Mike McCallum, Jermain Taylor, Wilfred Benítez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Andy Lee, Oscar De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Miguel Cotto and many more.

Image: Emanuel Steward diesBy Eric Thomas: Earlier today the internet was swamped with reports that legendary trainer Emanuel Steward having died in a Chicago based hospital. However, the reports were premature, as Steward is still alive according to his family members.

The Detroit Free press had this quote: “His [Steward] surgical team just dropped by and scoffed at the reports he is dead.”

Steward is still recovering from stomach surgery for diverticulitis in a Chicago hospital where he’s been laid up since September. It’s unclear what Steward’s status is at this time.

However, that rumor was shot down by his sister Diane Steward-Jones, who said to the Detroit Free Press “Emanuel is still with us. He hasn’t left the room. There is no shade over his head.”

According to USA Today, Steward is taking both traditional medicine for the pain and a “Palm healing or hands on healing alternative medicine procedure.”
