Alexander Defeats Callist

By Erik Smight: As expected, unbeaten light welterweight prospect Devon Alexander (15-0, 8 KOs) defeated Panamanian Miguel Callist (24-7-1, 17 KOs) last night, beating him by a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision on the undercard of the dull Cory Spinks vs. Verno Phillips IBF light middleweight title bout at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri. Alexander, 21, the former 2004 United States Amateur light welterweight champion, will be defending his lightly regarded WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title against the 33 year-old Callist. Alexander, a volume puncher known for his counter punching ability as well as his ability to slip punches, is coming off his best performance of his career, a 12-round unanimous decision over the hard-punching veteran DeMarcus Corley in January 2008.

Aside from the opening round when the 33 year-old Corley appeared to land the harder shots, Alexander had smooth sailing for the rest of the way, as he used his jab and straight left hand to easily defeat Corley.

Former World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley (31-7-1, 17 KOs) goes up against talented undefeated prospect Devon Alexander (13-0, 8 KOs) on the undercard of Roy Jones Jr. vs. Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden, in New York City, New York. Corley, 33, is disparately in the need of a win, having lost his last three fights in a row. However, it remains unlikely that Corley will come out on top in this one, as he seems to be a disk served up for prospect Alexander, 20, to look good against.

There is no stretching of the truth when it is said of Devon Alexander that he was a child prodigy in boxing or grew up in the sport.
