Martinez decisions Alexander; Selby defeats Montiel – Live Results

EW5G6759(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/PBC) By Scott Gilfoid: We may have seen former two division world champion Devon Alexander’s career effectively ended tonight with him losing a 10 round unanimous decision to journeyman Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs) on Wednesday night on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona. The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93, all for Martinez.

You hate to say that Alexander’s career is over with, but with him losing 3 out of his last 4 fights, I think you can make an argument for that possibility. Alexander’s punishing loss to Shawn Porter in 2013 seems to have taken something out of him because he hasn’t looked the same since then. Alexander was beaten by Amir Khan by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last December. Alexander then stayed out of the ring for 10 months until coming back to fight Martinez tonight. Alexander looked worse in this fight than he did in the Khan fight if you can believe it.

Alexander-Martinez & Selby-Montiel start time, where to watch

alexander556By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) is in a do-or-die fight tonight against journeyman level fighter Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) in a fight on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona. Alexander, 28, has seen his career go down the tubes lately with defeats against Shawn Porter and Amir Khan. Alexander has lost two out of his last three fights, and he’s now in the position where he cannot afford another defeat if he wants to keep his top 15 ranking in the 147lb division.

Start time for Alexander vs. Martinez & Selby vs. Montiel – 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Where to watch? Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN in United States.

Devon Alexander faces Aaron Martinez tomorrow night

Image: Devon Alexander faces Aaron Martinez tomorrow nightBy Dan Ambrose: Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) will be making his ring return this Wednesday in a must win situation against Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN against Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) at the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona.

Alexander, 28, still believes that he can eventually be one of the elite fighters in boxing, but with him having lose 2 out of his last 3 fights, the future isn’t looking bright for him right now. Alexander was beaten by Amir Khan last December in a 12 round decision loss.

Selby expecting tough fight against Montiel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TywUpBYBsb8

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF World featherweight champion Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) will be facing the aging 36-year-old former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs) tomorrow night on Wednesday on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona.

This is a fight that is hard to really like because of Montiel being so much smaller and older than Selby. The 5’4” Montiel started his career out as a flyweight, and it was only recently that he moved up to featherweight. #10 IBF Montiel clearly doesn’t belong in the ring with someone as tall as the 5’8 ½” Selby.

Deal reached for Devon Alexander vs. Diego Chaves fight, winner will be Kell Brook’s IBF mandatory

chaves33333By Dan Ambrose: With Amir Khan unwilling to take the fight with IBF welterweight champion, a deal was reached between the promoters for #6 IBF Diego Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs) and #8 IBF Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) for an IBF welterweight eliminator bout that will be taking place on September 26th at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

There was supposed to be a purse bid on Thursday, but it was canceled after the deal was reached on Wednesday of this week.

Devon Alexander – Diego Chaves purse bid on July 2nd

chaves444By Dan Ambrose: A purse bid is scheduled this Thursday [July 2nd] for an IBF eliminator bout between Diego Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs) and Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) at the International Boxing Federation headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey, according to Dan Rafael.

The Chaves-Alexander winner will become the IBF 147lb mandatory challenger to champion Kell Brook. However, it’s unclear whether the two fighters will even face each other because Chaves is promoted by Top Rank, and Alexander has Al Haymon as his adviser. The two generally don’t work together.

Khan numbers are impressive despite competing card

khan8By Phil Smith: The numbers are in and it’s all good news for Amir Khan. His showdown with Devon Alexander averaged  762k viewers on Showtime with a peak at 887k. Across town, at the Cosmopolitan, the Bradley did averaged 966k with a peak at 1M viewers. How is that good news for Khan?

HBO has several millions subscribers more than Showtime and yet, the difference between the two cards in terms of viewers was 125k. That means that a higher percentage of Showtime subscribers were interested in watching Khan as opposed to a lower percentage of HBO subscribers tuning in for the Bradley fight. If it was reversed, Khan would have probably averaged 1.5M on HBO.

Khan-Alexander averages 762K viewers on Showtime

khan774By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan has even less ammunition to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr now that Nielson has released his ratings for his fight last Saturday night against Devon Alexander on Showtime.

According to Dan Rafael the Khan-Alexander fight averaged 762,000 viewers with a peak of 887,000. These obviously aren’t good numbers, and they’re definitely not the kind of numbers that Khan can brag about in saying that the boxing public in the U.S can’t get enough of him.

With those kinds of numbers, it looks like the boxing public blew town last Saturday or else they were too busy watching the dueling telecast on HBO between Timothy Bradley and Diego Chaves.

Amir Khan – A Neutral Appraisal

khan6788By Jay McIntyre: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KO’s) has all the athletic aptitude to go very far in professional boxing. His hand speed is sharp, his accuracy with those flashy combinations is quite crisp and he has been involved in some very entertaining fights. He has fought some of the established names and won, and he has lost to two established fighters as well (and then there’s Breidis Prescott…).

It’s often been said that it’s always easier to learn from failures than to learn from victories. Sure, I’ll buy that, sometimes. But then there’s Amir Khan. His loss to Danny Garcia was chalked up to a glass jaw by some fans, and knockouts do indeed end most discussion on the matter. To be honest, I’m not sure it was his chin that was the problem in that fight. Let’s also consider his loss to Lamont Peterson.
