Deontay Wilder hurt right hand in 4th round against Stiverne

deontay201(Photo credit: Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: If you’re wondering why heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) was unable to score a knockout last night against the badly beaten and weary WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-2-1, 21 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, you only have to know that the 6’7” Wilder injured his right hand in the 4th round.

From that point on, Wilder had pain in his right each time he would land it. Eventually, Wilder rarely threw right hands after the 7th round. The pain was obviously a huge factor, because he couldn’t land his shots the way he did before hurting it.

Yeah, Stiverne went the distance with Deontay tonight, but it wasn’t pretty to see Stiverne getting hit with so many huge shots to the head. I mean, Stiverne was staggering around the ring in the 2nd and 7th rounds after getting clipped by some big punches from Deontay.

Deontay Wilder(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) will be on a mission tonight to become the first American heavyweight world champion in the last nine years when he faces WBC heavyweight champ Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

This is a big deal for Deontay for a lot of boxing fans in the United States, because there hasn’t been a world champion in America since Shannon Briggs won a title in 2006. That’s a long, long time ago, and it’s hard to believe there hasn’t been a world champion from the U.S all this time.

Deontay Wilder sees Bermane Stiverne as overrated

deontay5633222(Photo credit: Gene Blevins – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: America talent Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) is tired of hearing how dangerous a fighter WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs), and how experienced and powerful the guy is. Deontay doesn’t agree with any of the boxing fans or sports writers who have lifted Stiverne up to be another giant beater.

Deontay just sees Stiverne as just another overrated heavyweight who made a name off of beating a guy that was completely made to order for him in Chris Arreola. Deontay sees Arreola as the only name on Stiverne’s entire resume who is even slightly good, and he’s not impressed with Arreola.
