Round up of a month of boxing and potential match-ups to look forward too

golovkinBy HK: Well it has been quite a successful and exciting month of boxing, especially from a British perspective. We now have four fully fledged British world champions, who all hold the IBF version of the title. James DeGale (Super-Middleweight), Kell Brook (Welterweight), Lee Selby (Featherweight) and Carl Frampton (Super Bantamweight).

Although these haven’t all come from within the space of one month it is nonetheless extremely encouraging to see British fighters consistently challenging at world level. This coupled with the various interim and regular titles held by British fighters and British boxing could not be in a better place right now.

Lucas Browne eager to get Deontay Wilder in the ring

MDR-160612-Browne-v-Rasani-19By Scott Gilfoid: After seeing WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s recent interview in which he took some shots at him in questioning his confidence in the ring, #6 WBC Lucas Browne (22-0, 18 KOs) says he’d be very interested in facing the 6’7” Wilder in his next fight. Wilder says he’ll be back in the ring in September, and he’s yet to say who his next opponent will be.

It’ll be another voluntary defense for Wilder, as he’ll be facing his #1 WBA mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin in early 2016. It’s important that Deontay face an opponent around the same size with a similar fighting style as Povetkin.

Deontay Wilder: Lucas Browne might be my next opponent

wilderBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) says he’s interested in facing #6 WBC contender Lucas Browne (22-0, 19 KOs) because the trash talking the Australian fighter has been doing as of late has made it personal for him. Wilder would like nothing better than to get the 36-year-old Browne inside the ring so that he can test his power shots on his chin.

Browne is currently waiting on getting a crack at the WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev, and it’s doubtful that he would be willing to accept a far more dangerous fight against the 6’7” Wilder.

Deontay Wilder says Povetkin is like Stiverne all over again

wilder5555(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) isn’t too worried about fighting his No.1 WBC challenger Alexander Povetkin (29-1, 21 KOs) in the near future. Wilder says that Povetkin is like another Bermane Stiverne, a 6’2” fighter that Wilder defeated by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision earlier this year in January.

Stiverne, as good as he is as a fighter, just wasn’t tall enough to land his hard power shots against Wilder. If Stiverne was 6’6” or 6’7”, he would have had a chance of winning, but he didn’t have the arm length or the height to connect to Wilder’s jaw.

Deontay Wilder vs. Eric Molina averages 678K viewers on Showtime

Image: Deontay Wilder vs. Eric Molina averages 678K viewers on ShowtimeBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s title defense against Eric Molina (23-3, 17 KOs) last Saturday night only averaged 678,000 viewers on Showtime in their fight in Birmingham, Alabama.

The numbers for Wilder’s fight were far fewer than in his previous bout against former WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne last January. The Wilder-Stiverne fight brought in 1.24 million viewers on Showtime. Those numbers reflected how competitive the fight was seen. I mean, there were a lot of boxing fans who felt that Wilder was going to lose that fight. He fought really well and surprised fans by easily beating a guy that they thought would beat him.

Deontay Wilder vs. Wladimir Klitschko is one of the biggest fights in boxing, says Sulaiman

1-WILDERvsMOLINA-06132015-5120By Scott Gilfoid: WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman is looking forward in great anticipation to a heavyweight unification fight in the near future between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs).

Sulaiman believes the Klitschko-Wilder fight could take place by 2017. Wladimir and Deontay both have a lot to do before then. Wilder has a title defense coming against former WBA heavyweight belt holder Alexander Povetkin next year, as well as a voluntary defense on September 26th.

David Price eager for Deontay Wilder fight

1-WILDERvsMOLINA-06132015-4859By Scott Gilfoid: #14 WBA fringe contender David Price (19-2, 16 KOs) is hoping he can get a title shot against WBC heavyweight title against champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) after Price first takes on undefeated 2nd tier fighter Erkan Teper (14-0, 9 KOs) for the vacant European heavyweight title next month on July 17th in Germany.

Why the 31-year-old Price is fighting for a European strap at his age is anyone’s guess. That’s a strap that Price should have gone after in his first year as a pro, not in 6th year. It makes no sense at all other than making Price look like an underachiever in the minds of some boxing fans.

Is Deontay Wilder the future of boxing?

1-WILDERvsMOLINA-06132015-4562By Paolo Predonzan: Even if this is understandable, even if we are used to it, I find it quite amusing, if not pathetic and sad. I’m talking about the nowadays habit to hide the plain truth behind a little finger, in the name of what? Of course, in the name of business!

I know, we are all desperately tired of waiting for the new King of boxing. I mean the “real king of boxing.” Floyd Mayweather Jr. cannot be considered the real king of boxing. Not enough drama in his fights and not the right size.

Deontay Wilder to fight on September 26th, Arreola and Tony Thompson possibilities

wilder5555(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC #1 mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin will have to wait for his title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) a little while longer, as Wilder will be taking a voluntary defense on September 26th in California, Las Vegas or Biloxi, Mississippi, according to CBS Sports. The leading candidates for Wilder’s next title defense is Tony Thompson (40-5, 27 KOs) and Chris Arreola (36-4, 31 KOs).

Those are two good solid fringe contenders that are capable of beating a lot of the top heavyweights in the division on a good day. The Povetkin fight will likely take place in 2016 for Wilder, although the negotiations will start by October.

Did Deontay Wilder carry Eric Molina to the 9th on purpose?

1-WILDERvsMOLINA-06132015-4685By Scott Gilfoid: More and more boxing fans are starting to believe that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) purposefully carried his opponent Eric Molina (23-3, 17 KOs) to the 9th round before finally putting him out of his misery last Saturday night at the Bartow Arena, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.

In looking at the internet boxing chat rooms and message forums, a lot of fans think that the 6’7” Wilder chose to keep Molina around for the nine rounds in order to make the fight competitive rather than just going out there and blasting him out immediately like he capable of doing.
