Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola possible for summer

arreola45

By Jeff Aranow: 35-year-old former two-time world title challenger Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) is the fighter that is being talked about as WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s opponent for his next fight in July, according to a source from the LA Times.

Wilder was given another voluntary defense by the World Boxing Council after his previous opponent Alexander Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance Meldonium. Wilder was supposed to fight Povetkin on May 21 in Moscow, Russia.

Wilder wants Arreola as his opponent, according to the LA Times. Arreola isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies at this time. However, the WBC will likely give Arreola a quick top 15 ranking as soon as Wilder’s promoter Lou Dibella makes it official.

Deontay Wilder happy WBC allowing him to take voluntary defense

1-wilderszpilka (4)

By Jeff Aranow: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) has been given permission by the World Boxing Council to take a voluntary defense while they decide what to do with the 36-year-old Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), who was popped on a latest drug test by VADA on April 27.

Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance Meldonium, and the WBC took it seriously enough to postpone but not cancel the Wilder vs. Povetkin mandatory defense. On Wednesday, the WBC announced that Wilder can take a voluntary defense. However, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said that they’re still investigating the Povetkin case.

By Patrick McHugh: The World Boxing Council came out with a statement on Wednesday, saying that they’re still investigating the positive drug test from #1 WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), and that they will be making a ruling on his situation in the future.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says Deontay is free to take a voluntary defense of his title while he waits for the ruling from the WBC on Povetkin. Wilder has already taken three voluntary defenses since beating former WBC champion Bermane Stiverne last year in January by a 12 round decision.

Wilder’s manager says Povetkin fight is cancelled, not postponed!

povetkin7By Dan Ambrose: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s co-manager Jay Deas says his title defense against his WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) has been canceled, not postponed like World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman announced on Sunday in a press statement. There is difference. Sulaiman’s announcement made it appear to some boxing fans that the fight will be rescheduled at a later date. Deas is saying the fight is definitely canceled.

“The fight’s canceled,” Deas said to tuscaloosanews.com. “There is no postponement. It’s canceled. You can’t just pick up a fight and move it to another date and time as if it were a fighter with an injured hand. That’s a postponement. This was a violation of WBC rules, therefore this is a cancellation, which means we have to see what all the fallout is before we can proceed in any way. It’s definitely 100 percent canceled.”

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin: Why was it postponed?

povetkin100By Gerardo Granados: It was reported that heavyweight contender Alexander Povetkin tested positive to a banned substance previous his scheduled fight against WBC heavyweight belt holder Deontay Wilder. Meldonium is the name of the substance and I guess that the reader and I don’t know much about it, but if it is banned, then there should have been a good reason to do so.

After that news was known, it was then announced that the fight was going to be postponed.
