Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola on July 16

By Eric Baldwin: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) will reportedly be defending his title against 35-year-old former two-time world title challenger Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) on July 16 at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

This news isn’t going to make many boxing fans happy, because Arreola has won only one fight in the last three years of his career. Arreola’s record since 2013 is 1-1-1 with 1 fight scored as a no contest. That’s not good when you’re considering that Arreola is being given a world title shot.

Deontay Wilder wants to be great like Muhammad Ali

Image: Deontay Wilder wants to be great like Muhammad Ali

By Eric Baldwin: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) was shaken up to learn of boxing great Muhammad Ali’s death last Friday. Ali passed away at 74 in Phoenix, Arizona. Wilder says he wants to be great the way that Ali was during his pro career. The best way that Wilder wants to do that is by winning more world titles and unifying the heavyweight division.

Wilder liked the way that Ali didn’t hold his tongue when he was with people. He would say what was on his mind without reservations. Wilder admired that quality about Ali.

Dibella: Deontay has advantage over Joshua

Image: Dibella: Deontay has advantage over Joshua

By Scott Gilfoid: Lou Dibella, the promoter for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs), gives him the advantage over unbeaten – but totally untested – IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) in a fight between them. Dibella sees the 6’7” Wilder’s one-punch power as being one of the advantages he has over the 26-year-old Joshua.

Wilder’s right hand is a game changer, and he can land at any time. Dibella didn’t bother to point out that Deontay has much faster hand speed than the heavily muscled Joshua, and the much better mobility. Deontay hits faster and he’s not there to be hit in return due to his superior mobility.

Tyson Fury at it again?

fury76111

By Matt Stephens: IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury created a new firestorm of controversy yesterday with his new video on Youtube in which he made some comments about WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, IBF belt holder Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

In a way, yes, Fury was going on about his private parts and saying what he would do with Wilder. But this is just relatively standard rhetoric for Tyson. I know! Saying that seems crazy, but he’s been trotting this kind of language out for years with varying degrees of hilarity – we’ve come to expect it of him.

So nothing new there then? No big story? Well, it would seem there can be a story there if facts aren’t of much importance to your boxing media outlet. I watched the now removed video yesterday by IFL TV on YouTube while washing the pots and never batted an eyelid. Just another 10 or so minutes of Tyson doing what Tyson does.

Fury talks Klitschko and Wilder

fury76111

By Scott Gilfoid: IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) says he’s already ripped the heart out of Wladimir Klitschko (64-5, 53 KOs) in their fight last November in beating him by a 12 round decision. Fury says Wladimir hasn’t gotten his heart back since then. However, Fury says he plans on beating him badly in their rematch on July 9 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Fury says he’s going to give the 40-year-old Wladimir a real beat don when he gets him in the ring. Fury isn’t sure what Wladimir will do in the rematch, but he doesn’t see his fight strategy working for him.

New drug tests show Alexander Povetkin was clean

povetkin100

Ryabinsky press statement: The new doping test of the Russian boxer Alexander Povetkin, taken May 17, 2016, showed no traces of Meldonium. This was reported today by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) with reference to the results of analyses conducted by the laboratory in Los Angeles. The sample taken a week earlier also lacked traces of Meldonium. Thus, only one of Povetkin’s six samples revealed extremely low concentrations of the prohibited drug.

Deontay’s promoter eager for Fury fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Lou Dibella, the promoter for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) says IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) is the biggest name in boxing right now and the guy that they want as soon as possible.

Dibella believes the 27-year-old Fury is the bigger name for any of the top heavyweights – David Haye and Anthony Joshua – to fight right now. However, Fury must get by Wladimir Klitschko in their rematch in a month and a half from now for Wilder to get a shot at him.

Wilder’s promoter rules out David Haye as option for July

1-deontay-wilder (5)

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder won’t be facing 35-year-old David Haye (28-2, 26 KOs) for his next fight in July. According to Deontay’s promoter Lou Dibella, it’s too short notice for a fight between Wilder and Haye.

Dibella wants an opponent that can fight Deontay in the next eight weeks, and a fight against Haye wouldn’t be a rush job type of fight. They would want more time to build the fight properly. However, Dibella says a fight between Deontay and Haye is definitely something they’re interested in for 2017.

Arreola on shortlist of opponents for Wilder

Image: Arreola on shortlist of opponents for Wilder

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder could be facing the capable of Chris Arreola next on July 16 or in August, according to Dan Rafael. This would be a fine choice for Deontay in a voluntary defense to keep him busy while he waits for World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman to decide what he’s going to do with the positive drug tested Alexander Povetkin.

Wilder had his scheduled fight against Povetkin postponed after the Russian tested positive for meldonium a week and a half before their fight on May 21. The fight was then postponed courtesy of the WBC. Sulaiman said Wilder could take an optional defense but he wants him to do it soon; hence he’s in a rush to get a suitable opponent for July or August.

Wilder vs. Arreola – make proper fights please!

Chris Arreola

By Scott Bells: It was reported yesterday that Deontay Wilder is lining up Chris Arreola for his voluntary defence mid-Summer. I hope for the sake of boxing that this isn’t the case. I have read writers (particularly one on this site) bashing fighters for being matched up softly recently but this fight would really take the crown.

Chris Arreola was considered a decent heavyweight in 2009-2012 after he fought Vitali Klitschko but was soundly beaten. A subsequent loss to Pole Tomasz Adamek showed that he did not quite have what it took to be operating at world level (Adamek was a world class cruiserweight but not considered world class at heavyweight).
