Lemieux beats Gates, but he needs to step it several levels and face someone with a pulse

Image: Lemieux beats Gates, but he needs to step it several levels and face someone with a pulseBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated middleweight contender David Lemieux (25-0, 24 KO’s) beat yet another C level opponent on Friday night with his 2nd round stoppage of little known 37-year-old Purnell Gates (18-2, 13 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The fight was painful to watch because Gates looked terrified of getting hit, running constantly and doing a good job of making Lemieux look more than a little uncoordinated. The end came in the 2nd round when Gates went to a knee without getting hit. The bout was stopped and the Montreal crowd booed like mad.

The fight was similar in some ways to the David Haye vs. Audley Harrison bout that took place last month, because Gates looked reluctant to fight from the very start of the bout.

Lemieux faces 37-year-old Gates tonight

Image: Lemieux faces 37-year-old Gates tonightBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux (24-0, 23 KO’s) takes on 37-year-old Purnell Gates (18-1, 13 KO’s) tonight in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This should be another 1st round knockout for Lemieux in another easy fight that likely won’t teach him a whole lot. It’s sad that he’s not being put in with better fighters than this but it looks like his handlers want to keep him soft for awhile longer. There’s talk of Lemieux facing Marco Antonio Rubio (48-5-1, 41 KO’s) for the newly created World Boxing Council Silver strap title for April 2011. It will be interesting to see if that fight happens. It likely will depend on how well Lemieux does against Gates tonight.

David Lemieux takes on 37-year-old Purnell Gates on December 3rd

Image: David Lemieux takes on 37-year-old Purnell Gates on December 3rdBy Dan Ambrose: If you were hoping that unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux (24-0, 23 KO’s) would finally get put in with a live body after 24 fights against B level opposition, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. On December 3rd, Lemieux, ranked #3 WBC & #3 WBA, will be taking on 37-year-old Purnell Gates (18-1, 13 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. I’ve honestly never heard of Gates before, and in looking at the obscure opponents he’s faced in his seven-year pro career, I would give him zero chance of making it out of the 1st round against Lemieux next month.

Lemieux stops Camacho Jr. in 1st round!

Image: Lemieux stops Camacho Jr. in 1st round!By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux (24-0, 23 KO’s) simply had too much power for former light welterweight contender Hector Camacho Jr. (52-4-1, 28 KO’s) on Friday night, taking him out with a single right hand to the jaw that sent Camacho Jr. down as if he had been shot at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada/ Although Camacho Jr. was able to lean forward slightly, his legs were failed to work with him and the fight was quickly stopped by referee Michael Griffin at 3:00 of the 1st round. Lemieux, 21, didn’t look that great in the early part of the round, as he was hit with straight left hands and right hooks from Camacho when he would come charging forward.

Lemieux vs. Camacho Jr. tonight

Image: Lemieux vs. Camacho Jr. tonightBy Dan Ambrose: Number #3 WBC/WBA middleweight contender David Lemieux (23-0, 22 KO’s) will be defending his World Boxing Council International middleweight strap tonight against 32-year-old Hector Camacho Jr. (52-3-1, 28 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. Lemieux, only 21, won’t be fighting for any of the major titles for some time to come, because his manager wants to wait until he’s had at least 40+ fights before he takes on one of the champions. That’s a smart thing to do because Lemieux looks vulnerable on defense and undersized in terms of height and reach. Although is listed at 5’10 1/2″, his real height is likely around 5’8″, and his arms are very short for a middleweight. It’s going to be interesting to see how tall Lemieux is compared to the 5’8″ Camacho Jr.

David Lemieux vs. Hector Camacho Jr. on October 29th

Image: David Lemieux vs. Hector Camacho Jr. on October 29thBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux (23-0, 22 KO’s) will be taking on 32-year-old Hector Camacho Jr. (52-3-1, 28 KO’s) on October 29th at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. This is a fight that should give some kind of indication whether Lemieux is for real or not. Thus far, Lemieux has been carefully matched against B level fighters and it’s difficult to see if he can actually fight or not. He does seem to have good power, but his defense is completely missing. Lemieux goes out and tries to knock his opponents immediately.

Lemieux, 21, has an impressive knockout record but still is facing exclusively 2nd tier opposition despite being ranked number #3 by the World Boxing Council and #4 WBA in the middleweight rankings. For Lemieux, Camacho is pretty much the type of opposition he’s been served up for his three-year pro career.
