Canelo likely next for Cotto after Geale fight

cotto55By Dan Ambrose: If WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) can get past former IBF/WBA 160lb champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their fight on June 6th, Cotto will likely be facing the red-headed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in the fall, according to Steve Kim. He spoke with reps for Cotto, indicated that the 34-year-old Cotto will indeed be facing Canelo next.

There’s talk that Cotto will take the fight with Canelo even if he loses the fight to Geale. In other words, the Canelo fight can be seen as a kind of cash out fight for Cotto. He doesn’t really have many other options for big money fights unless he wants to bite the bullet and face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Cotto hasn’t given in any sign that he wants any part of the hard hitting Golovkin, even though the money would be good for Cotto.

Cotto could be out-weighed by 15lbs by Geale on June 6th

Image: Cotto could be out-weighed by 15lbs by Geale on June 6thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) could be giving away as much as 15 pounds against challenger Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 157 pounds on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Geale’s promoter Gary Shaw expects him to rehydrate to 175 after he makes weight for Cotto’s requested catch-weight fight.

It’s kind of sad to see the WBC middleweight champion reduced to asking for a catch-weight for him to defend his title. This is Cotto’s first defense of his WBC 160lb title that he won a year ago in June against 40-year-old Sergio Martinez, who came into the fight with a bum right knee after having had two surgeries on it in an attempt to fix the problem.

Cotto vs. Geale: Is the 157 pounds catch weight needed?

cotto57By Gerardo Granados: The reader must have noticed that Miguel Cotto won his WBA super welterweight and WBC middleweight titles against injured opponents, if not then you should search for the videos and see for yourself how the brave Yuri Foreman refuse to handle his championship title even though he had a severely injured knee; it was a superb show of hunger and determination worth to watch.

When Cotto won his WBC middleweight strap Sergio Martinez´s knees betrayed him but Maravilla did his best to fight back until his corner stop the beating. And by the way neither Foreman nor Martinez make any excuses after his defeat.

Geale: Cotto knows I’m going to use movement and my reach against him

gealePhoto credit: Ed Mulholland/Roc Nation Sports www.edmulholland.photoshelter.com – By Dan Ambrose: The bigger and more mobile #6 WBA, #6 WBC, #6 WBO Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) has already noted that the smaller, 5’7” WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) struggles against fighters that use a lot of movement and their longer reach against him.

Geale obviously plans on using both when he gets inside the ring against Cotto next month on June 6th on HBO at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Cotto won the WBC 160lb belt last year in June in his catch-weight against Sergio Martinez.

Cotto: Canelo fight is close to being realized

cotto6By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) says his fight against former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is practically a reality now that Canelo has beaten James Kirkland. Cotto only has to beat former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in their fight next month on June 6th, and then we could be seeing the Canelo-Cotto fight.

The Canelo vs. Cotto fight could be seen an elimination bracket where the two guys square off to face the fighter that many boxing fans see as the real middleweight champion in Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). However, that’s not the intentions that Canelo and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya have.

Geale plans on being elusive against Cotto on June 6th

Image: Geale plans on being elusive against Cotto on June 6thBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA 160 pound champion Daniel Geale says he’s going to make it extremely hard for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) to land his power shots in their fight on June 6th at the Barclays Center in New York.

Geale, 34, evidently has learned his lesson from his knockout loss to WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last year in July 2014. Geale didn’t do a good enough job of making Golovkin miss, and this resulted in Geale getting knocked out in the 3rd round. Geale won his last fight since then in defeating Jarrod Fletcher by a 12 round unanimous decision last December.

To catch weight or not to catch weight

cotto57By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Many boxing fans do not like it. They hate it. They loathe it. And whatever boxer proposes it, that fighter is going to get attacked. Catch weight simply means that a fighter must weigh a certain weight the night before the fight.

For example, Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale are fighting at a catch weight of 157 pounds. This means both fighters must get on the scale at 157 or under the night before the fight. On fight night, unless there is a rehydration clause, then both fighters are allowed to weigh whatever they want. But does the catch weight give an advantage or disadvantage?

Geale: I’m going to show Cotto what it’s like to fight a real middleweight

Roc Nation Sports & Miguel Cotto Promotions Present Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale on June 6 From Barclays Center in Brooklyn Live on HBO: Official Press Conference at The 40/40 ClubBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) plans on welcoming WBC 160 pound champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) to the middleweight division when they face each other two months from now in a catch-weight fight at 157 pounds on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

If Geale can use his mobility to bounce around the ring for 12 rounds against Cotto then he’ll have a good chance of out-boxing him the way that Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in their victories over the Puerto Rican star in 2012. They used movement to get the better of Cotto and limit the amount of power shots he was able to land.
