By Dave Lahr: As we survey the heavyweight scene one has to wonder who will be the top heavyweight in the future after the Klitschko brothers retire. As if now, there’s no one heavyweight that stands out above the rest. There’s currently four heavyweights that stand out from the rest of the division and look like one of them may have the talent to be good enough to dominate for awhile. With that said, all of the current crop of heavyweights is badly flawed and hardly the type of fighters that will make much of a lasting mark. Below I’ve listed the heavyweights that have the best chance of taking over after the Klitschkos retire.
Chris Arreola
Fights That Should Happen/Need To Happen In 2009
By Simon Hirst:
Joe Calzaghe vs Chad Dawson
First of all, people who have read my article may know I am a British fan, yet I choose skill over nationality and try to be as unbiased in my articles as I can. I would prefer to stick to facts more than opinion, but as it’s an article, I like to get my point across. Now I would want this fight to happen purely because Dawson is up there in the light heavyweights who Calzaghe hasn’t beaten. Personally I think the division is one of the most boring and least competitive divisions, so I can’t blame Dawson for having very little on his record that we can shout about.
Is Arreola Ready For A Fight Against Klitschko?
By Matt Stein: If the rumor of Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 46 KOs) potentially facing contender Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) in May turns out to be true, I wonder if this is a fight that Arreola is in fact ready for at this early stage in his career? Though he’s had 26 fights and beaten all his opponents, his opposition has been very limited at this point, with perhaps Travis Walker, perhaps, his best opponent to date.
Wladimir To Fight Arreola In April? – News
By Eric Thomas: According to Fight News, IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 46 KOs) may be fighting American Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs), the number #4 ranked heavyweight in the IBF, in April or possibly May 2008, with the fight likely to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Wladimir, 32, recently defeated challenger Hasim Rahman by an easy 7th round stoppage on December 13th. Rahman stepped in as a replacement opponent for Wladimir’s #1 mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs), who Wladimir was supposed to have fought on October 25th.
Arreola vs. Peter?
By Eric Thomas: In a potentially intriguing bout between two sluggers in the heavyweight division, the rumor is that there is a possibility of former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (30-2, 23 KOs) taking on top contender Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) in the near future. Although it’s still speculation at this point, this is a fight that would easily be one of the biggest fights of 2009 and possibly a ending up as one of the best bouts of the year. Arreola and Peter are two fighters of the same mold, both heavy, slightly paunchy (okay, in Arreola’s case, maybe a lot paunchy nowadays), hard punching and accustomed to scoring early knockouts.

Arreola Destroys Walker – Is Klitschko Next?
By Jim Dower: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) destroyed power puncher Travis Walker (28-2-1, 22 KOs) in a 3rd round stoppage in a International Boxing Federation (IBF) Heavyweight Title Eliminator match on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California. Arreola was knocked down after getting hit with two right hands in the 2nd round. However, he quickly returned the favor, knocking Walker down in the same round with a hard right hand.
David Haye vs. Cristobal Arreola – Who Would Win?
By Alan Thomson: The best American heavyweight versus the best British heavyweight. Two fighters who enter the ring with the same intentions – to seek and destroy.
What would make this fight so compelling is that both men have huge power and are not without their flaws. Apologies to my British friends but Haye can be a bit wild with his punches. And sorry my American compatriots but Arreola is defensively challenged. He is about as evasive as a lamppost. And raw power mixed with openings created by either wildness or lack of movement adds up to a knockout.
Paul Williams vs. Verno Phillips, Arreola vs. Walker Results
By Alan Thomson – Paul “The Punisher Williams” doled out a standard issue beat down to game but overmatched journeyman Verno Phillips last night in Ontario, California despite a nasty cut over his right eye as the result of an unintentional head butt in round one. Williams controlled the action from the opening bell, working on the inside against the shorter Phillips. Although Phillips was never seriously hurt in the bout, it was stopped by the ring doctor after the eighth round. Williams punished Phillips throughout the contest, doing some particularly vicious work to the body.
Who is The Next American Hopeful?
By Simon Hirst: America used to be the place where great champions were born. You would have to beat America’s finest if you could to prove yourself and be considered for greatness. America was the place where people would dream of going to fight the best. Madison Square Garden, Las Vegas, you name it, it was a dream for all boxers, American or not.
