Chad Dawson Edges Out Glen Johnson; Retains WBC Light Heavyweight Title!

By Matt Yanofsky: Undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson improved to 26-0 (17 KO’s) after a hard fought unanimous decision over 2004 fighter of the year Glen Johnson 47-12-2 (32 KO’s). Dawson controlled the first two rounds by landing quick accurate shots to the head of his opponent, who only landed a few good punches in total over the first two stanzas. Dawson went right back to work until the middle of the third when Johnson began to increase his work rate which gave Dawson trouble as his high volume of punches from close range was effective.

Dawson vs. Johnson on Saturday

dawson5756443431.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (47-11-2, 32 KOs) will be challenging undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson this Saturday on the undercard of the IBF light heavyweight bout between champion Clinton Woods and former champion Antonio Tarver at the St. Peter Times Forum, in Tampa, Florida. Johnson, now 39, is four years removed from winning the IBF light heayvweight title against Clinton Woods in February 2004, a title that Johnson subsequently turned around and lost a year later to Antonio Tarver in June 2005.

The high point of Johnson’s 15-year career arguably would have to be his 9th round KO of Roy Jones Jr., who Johnson knocked cold in September 2004 bout. Johnson, a heavy slugger with a relentless style of fighting, has shown himself to be vulnerable to fighters with superb boxing skills, such as Tarver, Woods and Julio Cesar Gonzalez, all of whom beat Johnson by unanimous decisions. Johnson rebounded from his 12-round split decision loss to Woods in September 2006, and has since won three consecuitive fights, most notably his 11th round TKO of Montell Griffin in the IBF title eliminator bout in May 2007.

Dawson Wants Bout With Jones

dawson575644343.jpgUndefeated World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (25-0, 17 KOs) expressed disappointment recently with Roy Jones Jr, who called out a number of fighters after beating Felix Trinidad last Saturday at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Specifically, Jones, 39, said that he’d be interested in fighting all comers, naming Joe Calzaghe, Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor as potential opponents that he’d like to mix it up with. However, one name that he left was Chad Dawson, the WBC light heavyweight title holder. Dawson had this to say about being ignored by Jones:

“Let’s see, he named middleweights Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor, super middleweight Joe Calzaghe, light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins, who has been asking for a rematch for over 10 years, and junior middleweight Oscar De La Hoya. Funny how big old ‘Superman’ doesn’t want to pick on someone his OWN size, like the reigning WBC light heavyweight champion – ME.” For whatever reason, Jones seemed to avoid mentioning the 25 year-old Dawson’s name, even though he’s widely considered to be the best fighter in the light heavyweight division.

Two-time light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (47-11-2, 32 KOs) was too much for his limited opponent Hugo Pineda (39-4-1, 28 KOs), stopping him in the 8th round of a scheduled 10-round fight on Saturday night at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The 36 year-old Pineda was taking severe punishment by Johnson on the ropes in the 8th when Pineda signaled to the referee that he’d had enough and wanted the fight to be stopped.
