British Fight Night Feast

Image: British Fight Night FeastBy Simon Hirst: Whilst tonight is going to remember as the ‘dream match’ between Pac Man and the Golden Boy, for British fans, there are also a lot of good British fights. I know that we have been treated to fights from Britain’s big three throughout November, but for four big British fights to happen on the same night means a big night for British boxing.

In no particular order, I’ll start with Amir Khan’s fight. He takes on the Irish-American Oisin Fagan, who despite a couple of losses, is a decent fighter. Some of the losses on his record have been controversial, his most notable loss coming to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who Wayne McCullough felt he deserved at least a draw.

Jermain Taylor vs. Carl Froch?

taylor576344.jpgBy Nate Anderson: In the latest boxing news, WBC super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has decided to vacate his WBC title, leaving it open for the next available contenders, in this case Carl Froch (23-0, 19 KOs) and former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KOs), now fighting as a super middleweight. However, it’s unclear whether Taylor, 29, whom has lost back to back fights against Kelly Pavlik, would be interested in facing the hard-hitting but largely unknown Froch, as Taylor has been reportedly showing interest in fighting former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy instead. A fight against the still popular Lacy, though greatly diminished since his loss to Calzaghe in 2006, would likely be a much more appealing fight in terms of the media than a bout against Froch, even without a title on the line.

Froch, 30, has been waiting in the wings for a title shot for more than a year, hoping either Calzaghe or Mikkel Kessler would give him a shot at their titles.

Froch Too Much For Rybacki

froch463221.jpgBy Dave Lahr: In a stay busy fight, undefeated super middleweight contender Carl Froch (23-0, 19 KOs) destroyed his Polish opponent Albert Rybacki (15-1, 8 KOs) in the 4th round on Saturday night at the Nottingham Arena, in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. Froch, 30, the #1 ranked fighter in the WBC super middleweight division, controlled every round, hurting Rybacki with tremendous shots. The end came in the fourth after Froch landed a series of hard combinations, ending with a big uppercut that snapped the head back of Rybacki. The referee John Keane them moved in and stopped the fight at 2:35 of the 4th round. Froch looked good throughout, although he tended to load up a bit too much in the fight, making him seem kind of slow and mechanical in the process.

The fight was never expected to be a competitive bout, since Rybacki, 37, was nowhere near the same class as Froch. However, the win served a purpose in that it kept pressure on WBC champion Joe Calzaghe, who will either have to make a decision to fight Froch, the number one contender, or vacate the belt. Froch said afterwards about Calzaghe, “He has to give it to me (a fight) or vacate the belt.”
