Froch vs. Kessler: Mikkel’s jab will be key to victory

froch11By Scott Gilfoid: If there’s one specific area where there is a clear different between IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) and WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) that separates the two fighters going into their May 25th fight this month it’s the vastly superior jab that the 34-year-old Kessler has going for him.

He not only has a better jab, but he’s a lot faster, throws better combinations, moves better and is the better athlete. But the jab is going to be the key to victory for Kessler because I see Froch backing off almost immediately at the start of the fight and looking to make it a jab war after he tastes some of Kessler’s power shots and realizes the hopeless of the situation.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., NOT an all time great!

may1(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Juan dela Cruz: I came across an article from another boxing site saying Floyd Mayweather Jr. was not an all time great. The writer’s reason was the absence of quality opposition. Although I agree with the writer, there is just one part I am in total contrast with. And that is the reason – absence of quality opposition.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not an all time great and the world knows this. But the reason is different. It is not the absence of quality opposition but Floyd’s reluctance to fight them. Floyd missed Kostya Tszyu when he was still at 140 lbs division and even Oscar dela Hoya during the golden boy’s prime. He avoided prime Sugar Shane Mosley, prime Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, and Manny Pacquiao.

Khan: I have the speed to beat Mayweather

11(Photo credit: Sakio Fakuda) By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) is another fighter in the same league as Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in terms of wanting a big payday fight against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s).

Khan has been talking about wanting a fight against Mayweather for at least two years now, and it looks like he’s about to get his way with the help of Golden Boy Promotions. Khan sees himself getting the fight with Mayweather in early 2014, and he thinks he’ll beat him.

Khan said to BoxNation: “To beat Floyd you have to beat him at his home game — box him the way he fights. I have got the speed and ability that can cope with him.”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera on August 3rd

chavez jr45By Allan Fox: Middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) is saying he’ll be facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) on August 3rd in a venue still to be determined. The fight will be a catch-weight fight at 164 or 165 lbs.

Chavez Jr. says he’s going to be moving up to super middleweight and this is a fight that will get his feet wet to see how he does at this weight.

Whether he struggles or not, Chavez Jr. is going to have to make the move to 168 or 175 in the near future because boiling down from the 190s to get to 160 has got to be an incredibly difficult ordeal for Chavez Jr.

Lennox: Deontay Wilder needs work on his punching

wilder23By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis recently got the chance to see unbeaten American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) destroy fellow British heavyweight Audley Harrison in a 1st round knockout in London, UK, and Lewis came away from the experience thinking that the 6’7” Wilder needs work on his punching.

Wilder hurt Audley with his first right hand of the fight, and he then snowed him under with windmill shots until Audley collapsed on the canvas. He got up and the fight was stopped because Deontay had done such a good job with his big power shots, but it looks like Lewis wasn’t all that impressed.

Mayweather hasn’t decided on Canelo fight yet

04(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: At Saturday’s post-fight press conference following his gem of a 12 round unanimous decision victory over Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) in Las Vegas, Nevada, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) shutdown talk of him stepping up in weight to face the heavier and younger WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) by saying he’s going to meet with his team plus his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. to decide on what’s the best direction to take for his September 14th fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather said “I’m not going to duck or dodge anyone, but I’m at the pinnacle of my sport and I’ve earned my stripes. I worked hard for 17 years to get to this point and I’m not going to rush.”

Ricky Burns vs. Jose Gonzalez this Saturday, May 11th in Glasgow, Scotland

5 may 2013 LLEGA CHELO GONZALEZ A ESCOCIA 06(Photo credit: PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will be making his third defense of his World Boxing Organization 135 pound title this Saturday night against the big punching Jose A Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

The 30-year-old Burns will be getting his first taste of power since his clinch-filled 12 round decision over Michael Katsidis two years ago in London.

Since then, Burns has had two easy fights against light hitters Kevin Mitchell and Paulus Moses. Gonzalez, 29, is a much bigger puncher than Katsidis or Burns’ biggest hitting opponent to date Roman Martinez, and he’s got huge, huge power in either hand.

Broner: Malignaggi is not at my level

YouTube video
By Eric Thomas: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) seemed to really get under WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi’s skin during their press conference last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada to build interest in their June 22nd fight next month at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Broner said after the press conference: “He’s [Malignaggi] like a female who wears her feelings on her sleeves. He’s upset; he’s hurt. He’s going to go send threatening messages to Jess. He feels like I’m a 130 pounder, 135 pounder, but you saw when we were shoulder to shoulder, he’s little. He’s not at my level.”

Mayweather shows his class again, but what’s next?

floyd#15By Rameez Haider: Last night we saw the Master class that is Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s) in beat Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero like Mayweather has moved up through the weights, and as he said himself, everyone he fought he has taken to the trenches. The way in which he dispatched of Andre Berto was a special performance from a very good boxer, yet he was made to look ordinary by an extra special talent.

This fight in many ways reminded me of the fight Mayweather had with Marquez.

Broner: Floyd took my easy work [Guerrero]

broner33By Eric Thomas: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner sounded a little disappointed last night after watching his good friend WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KO’s) ad his 44th win of his career in beating Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) in a 12 round unanimous decision victory in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Broner and Guerrero already had bad blood between them, and Broner was counting on getting the chance to expose Guerrero and get a nice little payday in doing so. The two fighters had a twitter war going on last year, and Guerrero got in Broner’s face when the two fighters met up outside the ring at a function.
