Super Heavyweight Super 6

1-DEONTAY WILDER-WEIGH IN-01152015-9717By Bob Smith: Late last year, following the surprise defeat of Wladimir Klitschko at the hands of Tyson Fury, noted author Bob Smith wrote a prescient article on the importance of size to the outcome of a fight in the heavyweight division. It is worth a read if you have not looked at it before:

I bring this up in particular because the author brought up a key point about the evolution of the heavyweight division. In references to the four fighters Klitschko, Fury, Deontay Wilder, and Anthony Joshua, he wrote:

The heavyweight division has everything right now

1-deontay-wilder (6)By Gav Duthie: Its arguably taken 20 years but the heavyweight division, the fulcrum of boxing, is something to get excited about again. It has been two decades since the all American showdown between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson (Nov 1996) which put Evander at the sports summit.

Heavyweights have always been the torch bearers of boxing and with todays popularity of UFC the resurgence of heavyweights can help boxing immensely. Since the Tyson era the division has been dominated by three people, Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko brothers, Vitaly and Wladimir which has lead to disenchantment with the heavy hitters.

Unlike many I’m a fan of all 3 but in any sport if one person/team dominates for too long it becomes stale. Fans need the unexpected, 50/50 fights, knockout artists, slugfests and rivalries and I think we are at the start of something great. The talent may not be the same as the 90s but the similarities are there.

Haye gives Joshua advice on Charles Martin fight

haye7888By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye is now giving advice to unbeaten British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) ahead of his title fight against IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) next month on April 9 on Sky Box Office at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

After learning that Joshua is talking about wanting to box the big 6’5” southpaw Martin rather than fight in his usual style of slugging it out, Haye says he sees that as a bad plan for Joshua.

Haye thinks that Joshua would be better off if he goes out and immediately jumps on the 29-year-old Martin from the 1st round to try and take him out quickly like Joshua has done with all of his opponents. In other words, Haye wants Joshua to bum rush Martin, even though that fighting style almost got him knocked out in his last fight against Dillian Whyte.

Joshua: I can’t wait to fight Tyson Fury

joshua56666By Scott Gilfoid: While David Haye is talking up a fight against unbeaten Anthon Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) in hopes of facing him this year, Joshua appears to be more interested in facing unbeaten IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs).

Joshua says he wants to face Fury, and he can’t wait to get the 6’9” fighter in the ring. Joshua feels that he’s going to get better as he picks up more experience and confidence from his wins. He also sees Fury as a clown and is irritated by him.

I don’t know why it would bother Joshua with Fury being a clown. Is it jealousy perhaps? Fury is getting a lot of attention when he opens his yap. Is Joshua not liking that Fury is getting attention? Does he want Fury just to stay quiet?

Lucas Browne’s management wants Haye, Fury or Joshua

browne54By Scott Gilfoid: With 42-year-old Fres Oquendo’s status unclear for him being able to be ready by June, the management for newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) are looking at other potential fights for Browne’s first defense of his WBA title in the next three months or so.

Browne knocked out champion Ruslan Chagaev (34-3-1, 21 KOs) in the 10th round last Saturday night to claim his WBA heavyweight title in Grozny, Russia. Browne was losing the fight, and had been knocked out previously in the 10th round.

Joshua wants to KO Charles Martin, then face Haye

joshua455By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten #2 WBC, #2 WBO, #4 IBF, #12 WBA Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) says he’ll be looking to score a knockout next month in his title challenge against IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) on April 9 on Sky Box Office pay-per-view from the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Joshua says if/when he sees an opening in Martin’s defenses, he’ll go after it and look to take him out. Joshua also says he’s interested in making a defense of his IBF title against 35-year-old David Haye after that.

It’s all dream stuff on Joshua’s part because there’s a very good chance that he’ll get blasted out by the 6’5” Martin by righting reckless like we’ve seen in his first 15 fights as a pro.

Haye sees Joshua and Martin in the same boat

Image: Haye sees Joshua and Martin in the same boatBy Scott Gilfoid: David Haye says he initially thought the April 9 fight between unbeaten giant heavyweights Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) and Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) would be a mismatch with the 6’6” Joshua wiping the deck with the inexperienced 6’5” Martin.

However, the more Haye has looked into the fight and learned about how talented the American Martin is, he’s seeing the fight now an evenly matched contest between two giant heavyweights that are both lacking in the experience department. With that being said, Haye still sees the heavily muscled 245lb Joshua as having the better experience of the two fighters.

Joseph Parker wants Anthony Joshua – Charles Martin winner

parkerBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated Joseph Parker (18-0, 16 KOs) will be keeping a close eye on next month’s title fight between IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin and Anthony Joshua at the O2 Arena in London, UK. The 24-year-old Parker wants to fight the winner of that contest, and he’s keen at getting the chance to fight the 6’6” Joshua.

Parker isn’t saying why he’s interested in fighting Joshua, but it could be he’s spotted how slow of hand, how robotic and how over-muscled Joshua is and he sees weakness. We just saw Joshua exposed in his last fight against Dillian Whyte in which Joshua was staggered in the 2nd round, and looking like he was laboring. Who knows?

If not for Whyte suffering a shoulder injury to his primary weapon, his left hand, we might have seen Joshua getting blasted out in that round. I can’t see the 24-year-old Parker hurting a shoulder in the round that he staggers Joshua.

Haye wants Joshua to beat Martin

haye1By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye is pulling for unbeaten Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) to unseat IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) next month in their fight on April 9 at the O2 Arena in London, England. The way Haye sees it, if Joshua wins the IBF crown, he’ll immediately have to voluntary title defenses he can get out of the way before he’s forced to face his mandatory challenger.

Haye feels that he’ll be one of those voluntary defenses Joshua will take. Despite having fought only once in the past three and a half years, Haye likes his chances against the 6’6” Joshua.

It could be that Haye has noticed that Joshua pushes his punches and lacks the explosive power that you see in faster heavyweights like Deontay Wilder, or Haye could just be looking for a cash out fight to make a big payday before going off into another long inactive period.

Fury wants Anthony Joshua vs. Charles Martin winner

fury443By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like you can forget about Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) facing WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder last this year in a big mega-fight. Fury says he’s interested in fighting the winner of the April 9 fight between IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) and Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs).

Fury is hoping fellow Brit Joshua will win because it would setup a huge money fight between the two of them in the UK for later this year. The money that Fury would make against Joshua would likely be substantial, given that it would probably be televised on Sky Box Office PPV, and a high number of boxing fans would purchase it.

For Fury to get the mega-fight that he wants, he needs to defeat Wladimir Klitschko in a rematch. Additionally, Joshua will need to do his part by beating the 6’5” Martin on 4/9. Neither of these things are easy tasks, and it’s quite likely one of those fights won’t go as planned.
