Andy Lee to face Billy Joe Saunders on September 19th

By Scott Gilfoid: On September 19th, 31-year-old WBO middleweight title holder Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) will be defending his WBO title against his #1 challenger Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) at the Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick, Ireland. It’s not a great fight as far as the U.S boxing fans go, but it’s a match-up that will interest the UK fans.

In reality, this is more of a contender fight rather than a champion defending his title against a challenger.

Andy Lee vs. Billy Joe Saunders possible for September 5th in London, UK

lee1By Scott Gilfoid: After fighting to a 12 round draw against Peter Quillin in his first defense of his title last April, WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) will be moving on to make a defense of his title against his #1 WBO Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) on September 5th at a still to be determined venue in London, UK.

There’s obviously still unfinished business for Lee against Quillin, but it looks like Lee has decided to go in another direction rather than take a big risk against the hard hitting Quillin in a second bout.

Andy Lee: An unappreciated champion

1-Andy Lee wins WBO title By Seán Skehan: Andy Lee currently resides in high company. As the WBO middleweight champion, Lee counts Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto among his peers as world title holders in the 160lb’s division. Golovkin or ‘Triple G’ as he is more commonly known has lit up the division with a sequence of twenty consecutive knockout victories. His profile is beginning to transcend that of the division and boxing, as the general sports fan begins to take note of his all action style and likeable public persona.

With HBO featuring him regularly and commentators everywhere clamoring for a catch-weight match-up with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Golovkin seems well placed to continue to cement his position as the heir apparent to Mayweather as the face of boxing after the latter’s expected retirement in September.

Cotto has been an ever present name amongst the elite of the sport for over a decade.

1-vlcsnap-2015-05-17-05h03m54s131By Allan Fox: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) shined tonight in stopping American Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) by a 6th round knockout in a fight that Golovkin admitted that he carried Monroe to the 6th round because he didn’t want to finish him off quickly in the first couple of rounds.

Golovkin said after the fight that he wants a unification fight against one of the middleweight champions if he can’t get a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto.

PBC on NBC April 11th Post-fight reviews and analysis

lee1By Daniel Reed:

Andy Lee vs. Peter Quillin
The first televised fight of the night here in the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn was an intriguing Middleweight match-up between the very popular “Irish” Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KO’s) of Limerick, Ireland, and Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s) of Brooklyn by way of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The red hot Lee was coming off two impressive come-from-behind, Gatti-esque knockout victories over John Jackson of the Virgin Islands at 154 lbs., and the former Olympian and amateur standout from Russia, Matt Korobov.

Golovkin’s promoter says he can put together HBO-backed financial deal for Andy Lee-Golovkin fight

lee564By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says he can work with HBO to put together an HBO financed deal to put together a Golovkin vs. Andy Lee unification fight. Lee, 30, recently fought to a 12 round draw against former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin last Saturday night on April 11th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

While some boxing fans thought that Lee was robbed in that fight, it was clear to a lot of fans that Lee had simply given up too many rounds in the early part of the fight for him to get the ‘W’ in the fight. Lee was knocked down twice by Quillin in getting dropped in the 1st and 3rd rounds.

Quillin puts in game effort against Andy Lee

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite coming off a year long layoff, former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs) looked incredibly sharp last Saturday night I fighting to a controversial 12 round majority draw against WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Garcia defeats Peterson; Lee – Quillin fight to 12 round draw

garcia67By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) stays unbeaten tonight in defeating IBF 140 pound champion Lamont Peterson (33-3-1, 17 KOs) by an unimpressive 12 round majority decision in their catch-weight fight at 143 pounds on the Premier Boxing Champions on NBC at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York. The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 115-113, and 115-113.

Peterson really whipped Garcia in the last half of the fight, and he had Garcia backing up and looking beaten black and blue around the face. Garcia likely would have been knocked out if Peterson pressured him from the beginning of the fight instead of waiting so long before he started coming on in the second half.

Purses: Garcia $1.5M, Peterson 1.2M, Lee 500k, Quillin $500k

garcia65By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) will be the highest paid fighter in tonight’s card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The 27-year-old Garcia will be getting $1.5 million for his 143 pound catch-weight fight against IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs).

That’s not bad money for a fight that has failed to catch the public’s imagination. Peterson will be getting $1.2 million. This may be as good as it gets for Peterson unless he can win, and keep moving his fight forward.
