Alexander Povetkin
Povetkin could be facing 49-year-old Holyfield next
By Jason Kim: Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15 KO’s) captured the vacant WBA heavyweight title last night with a 12 round unanimous decision over former WBA champion Ruslan Chagagaev (27-2-1, 17 KO’s) in Efurt, Germany. The win you would think would lead to Povetkin taking on one of the Klitschko brothers in one of the huge stadium fights that the Klitschko brothers are known for.
WBA creates new heavyweight title
By John F. McKenna (McJack): In a move that defies any kind of logic the WBA has created yet another title. When Wladimir Klitschko defeated WBA champion David Haye in July and took his title the Klitschko’s held all the heavyweight titles. In their infinite wisdom the Caracas based WBA made the decision to upgrade Vladimir to the level of “Super” heavyweight champion and then declared his WBA title vacant.
Povetkin decisions Chagaev, both fighters look horrible
By Eric Thomas: Undefeated heavyweight Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15 KO’s) pounded out a very unimpressive 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night against former WBA heavyweight title holder Ruslan Chagaev (27-2-2, 17 KO’s) at the Messehall in Erfurt, Germany. The Judges’ scores 116-112, 117-111 and 117-113.
Will Haye fight the Povetkin-Chagaev winner if they look especially bad?
By William Mackay: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye is very interested in tonight’s fight between Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev as they fight for Haye’s old WBA heavyweight title in Germany. Haye will be following the action as a curious observer. I can see Haye choosing the winner of this fight if they look terrible. But if the winner is impressive in any way, I doubt Haye will take that fight. It wouldn’t fit with his pattern of facing mostly depleted heavyweights on the slide.
Steward: Chagaev-Povetkin for the WBA title is an embarrassment to boxing!
By Jason Kim: Photo: Wende – Trainer Emanuel Steward is disgusted with this Saturday’s fight between Russian heavyweights Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KO’s) and Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KO’s) for the vacant WBA heavyweight title at the Messehalle, Erfurt, Thüringen, Germany. Steward sees that fight as a joke when a world title is attached to it.
