Gary Todd has been involved in boxing forever. For him, boxing is so much more than a sport. It’s in his DNA. Gary Todd’s latest work feels like stepping into a time capsule of real fighters — not the Instagram kind, but the ones who bled for it. Twenty-six champions from across the globe, each story laid out with rare photos, original artwork, and that “day in the life” touch only a true boxing man could pull off.
Decades of walking the walk and talking the talk with the greatest fighters, both training in their gyms, to interviewing legendary boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Marvin Hagler, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Roberto Duran, and Tommy Hearns, to name a few.
This latest offering from Todd has 26 boxers from the four corners of the world, and as soon as you open the first page, you know you’re in for a treat. The quality, the layout of rare photos, and original artwork are a tremendous addition to this book, but what makes Todd’s book so special is his unique writing style as he transports the reader into the featured fighters’ world, which sets the scene for each boxer’s journey and gives the reader a story within a story.
Have you ever wondered what a typical day in the life of a champion boxer is? What does he eat? What does he do while in training for a big fight, and what is his life as a fighter like? It’s a fly-on-the-wall look at each boxer, and it’s all in the section of the book called ‘A Day in the Life of the Champion ‘, which I found fascinating. As I turned each page, it was hard to stop reading, especially when I reached the champions’ workouts. They were a real eye-opener and an inspiration, giving me genuine insight into what these guys did to become champions. From Gennady Golovkin, to Jai Opetaia, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Azumah Nelson, “Greatest Ever Boxing Champions” is a visual treat and uniquely superb.
