Sunny Edwards vs Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in the works for November or December

By Jake Tiernan: Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed this week that he wants to make a unification fight between flyweight champions Sunny Edwards and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez for November or December.

WBO 112-lb champion ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KOs) needs to heal from jaw surgery before he can meet up with IBF champion Sunny (19-0, 4 KOs) at the end of the year.

Rodriguez, 23, suffered a broken jaw in his 12 round unanimous decision win over Cristian Gonzalez in a battle for the vacant WBO title last April.

For his part, Sunny Edwards must win his fight this Saturday, June 10th, against #7 WBO Andres Campos (15-0, 4 KOs) at Wembley Arena in London.

Hearn has the idea for the winner of the Sunny Edwards vs. Jesse Rodriguez fight to battle, the winner of the fight between WBA champion Artem Dalakian and WBC champion Julio Cesar Rodriguez for the undisputed championship at flyweight.

It’s a good thing for these champions that Junto Nakatani vacated his WBO flyweight title to move up to 115 because it’s likely that he would have beaten all of them.

“A broken jaw is never good. It’s going to take some time to heal. He’s going to be ready in November – December, and I think we can make the Sunny Edwards fight,” said Eddie Hearn to Matchroom Boxing about Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.

“We’re in talks at the moment to make Jesse Rodriguez against Sunny Edwards. It’s one of the best fights in boxing, unquestionably. I know it’s the little guys, and I know it doesn’t quite have the profile and the adoration of Fury against AJ.

“I’m telling you now, Jesse Rodriguez against Sonny Edwards is one
of the best pound-for-pound fights in boxing, and that is a fight we would like to make. I think Jesse and [trainer] Robert Garcia would go straight into that fight in November or December.

“Julio Cesar Martinez does have some backed-up mandatories, but I want to get this division unified. I want to have one undisputed champion.

“We don’t get the chance to do that very often, but when there is a path, when there is a way, let’s get it done. Jesse Rodriguez against Sonny Edwards, Julio Caesar Martinez against [Artem] Dalakian. The winners fight the winner. One champion
