By Jake Tiernan: Sunny Edwards says he’s going to make challenger Andres Campos “look silly” tonight when he defends his IBF flyweight title against him at the OVO Arena Wembley in London, England.

The undefeated Edwards (19-0, 4 KOs) and #7 IBF Campos (15-0, 4 KOs) met today for their final press conference.

Campos, 26, wisely chose not to wear a cap after having it knocked off his head by Edwards on Wednesday during their head-to-head for a promotional photo shoot.

If Edwards comes out victorious on Saturday night, Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn says he wants to put him in against WBO champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez later this year for a unification fight.

That’s a fight where boxing fans will get the opportunity to see whether the 27-year-old light-hitting Edwards is cut out to mix it with the best at 112. It’s one thing for Sunny to beat an old, past his best 40-year-old Moruti Mthalane, but it’s an entirely different kettle of fish mixing it with ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.

If Edwards can’t hang with ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, Hearn will need to downgrade his huge expectations for him because right now, he’s talking kind of crazy, saying that Sunny is the pound-for-pound, the best fighter in the UK.

Hearn may need to come back down to earth because he’s a little too enamored by Edwards, blowing his wins over Mthalane and 34-year-old Felix Alvarado out of proportion.

“I’ll make the muppet look silly,” said Sunny Edwards today at the final press conference for his clash against Andres Campos

“Sunny Showtime Edwards against Andre Campos from Chile looking to become the first world champion from Chile on Saturday night,” said Eddie Hearn at today’s final press conference between IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards and Andres Campos before Saturday’s fight in London.

“Sunny Edwards, I think is you know, I made a comment earlier this week where I said this man could be the best pound-for-pound fighter in Britain,” Hearn continued. “I honestly believe he’s a special talent. I
said yesterday as well that I never particularly used to like him. you

“I used to watch him on social media and think, ‘I’m not sure about this kid.’ I pulled him up once in Sheffield and he had a go at me and I thought, ‘if you can’t beat him sign him.’

“As I saw him win the world championship against [Moruti] Mthalane, I told him yesterday that I didn’t really want him to win that night. He was unbelievable, didn’t lose a second of any round, won every round and I believe he’s a very special fighter, a fighter that could go on and become undisputed in the flyweight division.

“Would you make him favorite against Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez? Would you make him favorite against Julio Caesar Martinez? Against Dalakian? Would you make him favor it against Roman Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada?

“Quite possibly but Saturday night, as I said before, we talk about all these fights and Alfie talks about the DAZN on a global level and we can deliver all these huge notification fights around the world. Yes, we can but you have to beat what’s in front of you. To my left is a young hungry challenger [Campos], undefeated looking to become the first world champion from Chile, a good fighter who’s been calling Sonny Edwards out for two years. He now gets his opportunity on Saturday night.

“Andres, welcome. You’ve been calling for this fight for a long time You’ve got it; you’re facing a fantastic fighter but you believe you can
become Chile’s first world champion on Saturday.

“This Saturday, you’re going to see one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in Sunny Edwards defend his belt. Two undefeated fighters in a fantastic fight. Two other world championship fights on the card,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV.
