By Robert Segal: Vasyl Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas says they’re planning on appealing the decision for Loma’s loss to the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his questionable defeat at the hands of undisputed lightweight champion Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney last Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Klimas says it was robbery in broad daylight, with the judges giving Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) a twelve round unanimous decision by the scores 115-113, 115-113, and 116-112.
In the aftermath of the contest, there’s been a huge uproar over the outcome, as boxing fans feel collectively that Lomachenko should have been given the victory, not Haney.
Klimas admits that he’ll “likely’ fail at getting the results of the Hany vs. Lomachenko fight overturned, but he’s got to at least try.
If it doesn’t get overturned, Haney will forever be viewed as having a tainted win, similar to Canelo Alvarez’z first two contests against Gennadiy Golovkin.
Where it could impact Las Vegas is where fighters may choose to avoid fighting in that city, wanting to keep from getting similar treatment from the judges.
“This is the biggest robbery in the middle of the day. For the other team, Christmas came in the summer, and we’re not going to let it go. I guarantee that we’re going to protest. I guarantee we’re going to appeal that decision,” said Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas at the post-fight press conference after Loma’s loss to Devin Haney.
“Somebody needs to end this injustice. Those judges’ scoring is completely insane, and they do not understand that those fighters are working hard to get into a place. To be robbed like that is not acceptable.
“I guarantee we’re not going to let it go. We’re going to goal the way to the end to appeal, and maybe we’re not going to win. Maybe it’s going to be as it is. Most likely, it’s going to be, but we want to show that it has to be justice,” said Klimas.
Jorge Linares says Lomachenko was robbed
“It was a big robbery. Watch out for your wallet, your watch, and everything,” said Jorge Linares to Fight Hub TV when asked about his thoughts on the Haney – Lomachenko outcome.
“Honestly, I had Loma by two points. 112-116, what s**t was that? It was stupid, but that’s what we see right now in boxing,” said Linares referring to judge David Moretti, who scored it 116-112 for Haney.
