Jermall Charlo & Jaime Munguia want to fight in September

By Dan Ambrose: Jermall Charlo & Jaime Munguia have agreed to fight each other in September, and they want Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions to make the fight happen.

WBC middleweight champion Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) would be coming off a long 27-month layoff if the fight with #2 ranked Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) happens.

The World Boxing Could have to sanction the Charlo-Munguia fight, which means that Carlos Adames, the interim WBC 160-lb champ, would be skipped his long-awaited turn to challenge for a world title.

Jermall hasn’t defended his WBC title for two years, and it wouldn’t be fair if he were to pick Munguia over Adames. Of course, that would be up to the WBC to decide.

If they’re okay with Charlo bypassing Adames to fight the 26-year-old former WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia, that’s how it would be.

Munguia has recent wins over Gonzalo Gaston Coria, Jimmy Kelly, D’Mitrius Ballard, Gabe Rosado, Kamil Szeremeta and Tureano Johnson.

Jermall Charlo: “Make the right happen!!! @oscardelahoya. Thanks.”

Jaime Munguia: “Here I am. See you in September. This time for real. You’ve been out of the ring for two years and counting.”

It could be complicated for De La Hoya to make a fight with the 32-year-old Jermall because not only would there be network issues that could be an obstacle to negotiating this fight, but also the mandatory situation.

The PBC managed Charlo fights on Showtime, whereas Munguia is with Golden Boy, and his bouts are shown on DAZN. Charlo-Munguia isn’t a PPV-worthy fight, so it’s not like it’s worthwhile for DAZN & Showtime to have a dual-network match.

If these two were popular, like Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia, then it would be worthwhile to do the Charlo vs. Munguia fight on two networks, but that’s not the case.

Munguia is a ten-year pro, who has been kept in the slow lane his entire career, treated like a fragile prospect, and steered around the dangerous fighters. The best guy that Munguia has fought during his career is journeyman Gabe Rosado, and that was a fairly recent fight.

Jermall would be taking a risk fighting Munguia because he can make more money fighting Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant, or David Benavidez. It’s pointless for Charlo to fight Munguia because the money won’t be huge and it would be risky.
