By Sean Jones: Devin Haney is expecting a dirty fight from Vasily Lomachenko on Saturday night with the popular fighter using different tactics to try and produce a victory for their bout on ESPN+ PPV in Las Vegas.
Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) normally doesn’t use dirty tactics unless his opponents are tying him up repeatedly. When that happens, Loma sticks his head into the face of his opponents to pry himself loose so that he can continue fighting.
For Haney (29-0, 15 KO), it is a cause for concern if Lomachenko doesn’t allow him to hold because he likes to throw shots and then fall forward to tie up his opponents. That was Haney’s game plan for his last three fights, which allowed him to stymie the offense of George Kamboso Jr and Joseph Diaz.
“We know that Loma’s game plan is to try and get inside and make it as dirty as possible, try and hit on the break and do things like that,” said Devin Haney to the media.
“I’m a strong fighter, I’m big, I’m conditioned, and I’m going to break him down. I know that’s his game plan to try and break me down and wait until I get tired, but I’m going to break him down,” said Haney.
“You can watch a 1000 videos on me, but a different fighter goes in there. He can prepare for whatever game plan that he wants, but when he goes in there; it’s going to be totally different. It’s easier on the outside.
“He’s known for his big amateur background. He had a lot of amateur fights and a lot of victories. A lot of people still talk about that. This is the pros; it’s the big leagues.
“Right now is the perfect time. I’m feeling strong, mature. My mind is clear, and everything is great. I’m in great spirits. I can’t wait until fight night. It’s going to be a great night for my team. It’s going to be a fun night, and I’m looking forward to it.
“Nah, obviously, he’s a pro. He’s a former three-division world champion. My career is going great. Everything is happening at the right time.
“Now that I have the belts, I’ve got the keys to the lightweight division, and everybody wants to see me,” said Haney.
