David Morrell says Benavidez fight “100% happening” in September

By Dan Ambrose: David Morrell Jr (9-0, 8 KOs) says a fight between him and David Benavidez is “100%” happening for September. The fight hasn’t been made official yet, so it’s unknown whether it will happen.

When Benavidez was asked to confirm the Morrell fight happening next, he seemed ambivalent about it, not showing a lot of enthusiasm about the match-up.

Morrell needs Benavidez’s scalp to help him get the fight against Canelo Alvarez for himself. While the Mexican star has no desire to fight Benavidez, maybe he’ll agree to face Morrell after he beats him.

Some believe that it’s dawned on Benavidez that he could lose to Morrell after watching him badly hurt his second consecutive opponent. Morrell isn’t just knocking out his opponents. He’s hurting them severely.

With the money that Benavidez could make fighting Canelo Alvarez, it’s not surprising that he’s not enthusiastic about fighting Morrell. If he loses to the talented Cuban, he can forget about fighting Canelo.

Morrell successfully defended his WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight title last Saturday night, stopping Yamaguchi Falcao (24-2-1, 10 KOs) in the first round in the chief support role on the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I’m so excited. It was a big night for me. It was my first time in Vegas. It’s crazy s**t,”  said David Morrell Jr to Fighthype after his win over Yamaguchi Falcao. “It’s everything—my first time in Vegas, and knockout in the first round.

“It’s an opportunity to become a big name and the next big everything. I have to tell everyone at 168 that I’m here,” Morrell continued. “I thought I hurt him [Falcao]. Everybody told me that he was ok. It’s boxing; you know what I mean?

“I’m looking at you, and you’re looking at me. I don’t want to lose. Thank God that Yamaguchi is ok. So everything is fine. Everybody is talking s**t, so f**k it,” said Morrell about him only having nine fights on his resume.

“I tell everybody that I got the belt. I’m here and at 168. Everyone sees me. I’m ready. Yeah, 100%,” said Morrell when asked if he’s going to fight Benavidez in September. “Maybe this year it’s Benavidez. Maybe no. It’s okay. It’s a good fight.

“I think it’s a good fight for him and for me. It’s a good fight. I want Benavidez. It’s a perfect fight. Thank you, everyone for supporting me,” said Morrell.
