By Vince D’Writer: Since retiring back in 2017, former five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (50-0, 27 KOs) has been able to consistently orchestrate lucrative exhibition bouts, but on February 25th, Mayweather performed inside an empty 02 Arena in London, and as a result, whispers are starting to circulate in regards to the Mayweather exhibition train showing signs of derailment.
Mayweather started his professional boxing journey back in 1996, and during the course of a 21-year career, he’s won 15 major world titles and posted victories against boxing legends such as Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Alvarez.
After closing out his career with victories against Andre Berto and Conor Mcgregor, fight fans assumed that Floyd Mayweather’s time inside the squared circle had expired, but Mayweather was able to extend his time and earning power inside the ring by way of the exhibition bout.
On December 31, 2018, Floyd “Money” Mayweather made his debut in the world of exhibition boxing by knocking out Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. He would go on to face the likes of Logan Paul, Don Moore, Mikuru Asakura, Deji Olatunji, and Aaron Chalmers.
Prior to his match against former Bellator MMA fighter Aaron Chalmers, the Mayweather exhibition bouts were fairly successful. The lack of an audience in his most recent match makes one wonder, has the public grown tired of watching Mayweather toy around with overmatched opponents?
If Mayweather plans on continuing his exhibition boxing career, he must find a way to recapture the attention of the boxing public. Could an exhibition bout against an old friend provide the spark Floyd Mayweather needs to get his exhibition boxing money train back on track?
Four-time boxing champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) had a promising start to his pro boxing career, but problems outside of the ring have placed Broner’s career in jeopardy on multiple occasions. After an 18-month hiatus, he was scheduled to make his return against Omar Figueroa back in August 2022, but the match was canceled due to Broner citing mental health issues.
A month later, Broner made an announcement that he signed a three-fight, eight-figure deal with BLK Prime. After making three failed attempts to deliver a matchup for February 25th, Broner and the BLK Prime boxing platform came to a mutual agreement to part ways.
In a recent video, Broner confirmed he’s a promotional free agent; he’s in shape and ready to fight. Unfortunately, no promoter has shown interest in signing Broner as of yet, but there is a way that Broner could make a return to the ring and help generate a significant amount of revenue.
Early on in his career, Adrien Broner used to refer to Floyd Mayweather as a big brother and a mentor, but around 2016, Mayweather and Broner developed an on-again, off-again type of friendship. Recently it has seemed to be more off than on, but could the two men put their differences aside to cash in on a money-making opportunity?
Adrien Broner has already stated he is willing to step in the ring to face Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition type of match. As a guest on the Cigar Talk podcast, Broner spoke on how if the roles were reversed, an exhibition match between him and Mayweather would have already taken place.
“If I was Floyd and he was me, he would never have to fight again because that exhibition sh*t, as me being his lil brother, hey lil bro, we fixing to do 10-rounds and we both going to get 100 plus million for it, and we ain’t never got to box again. Well, well, I already been getting these bags, but now it’s time for you to get your just do, and you ain’t never got to box again. That would have been done! That would have been done!”
An exhibition match between Mayweather and Broner is an interesting idea because of their individual personalities, the potential press conference dialogue, and the actual matchup inside the ring. A clash between Mayweather and Broner could be very entertaining, and it’s a bout that a large number of boxing fans would pay to see.
We already know Adrien Broner is open to the idea, but we don’t know how Mayweather feels about an exhibition involving himself and Broner. Floyd Mayweather is always seeking opportunities to generate currency, and if he wants to continue doing what he labels as legalized bank robberies, then maybe he should consider teaming up with Adrien Broner to commit the next lucrative heist.
