By Ken Hissner: At the Toyota Arena, Ontario, California, Saturday over Showtime promoter Tom Brown (TGB Promotions) and Sampson Lewkowicz (Sampson Boxing) presented former WBA Super Bantam champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa defeating former WBC Featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo for the vacant WBC Interim World Featherweight title.
In the Main Event former WBA Super bantam champ and WBC No. 1 ranked Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa, 24-1-1 (18), #125.8, of Weslaco, TX, defeated WBC No. 2 ranked Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo, 24-1 (16), #126, of Bohol, PH, and Valencia, CA, over 12 rounds, for the vacant WBC Interim World Feather title.
In the first two rounds Figueroa kept switching from southpaw and back to orthodox pressing Magsayo. In the third through the fifth rounds Figueroa had Magsayo against the ropes as both were landing punches. In the seventh round Referee Thomas Taylor warned Magsayo for holding.
In the eighth round Taylor took a point from Magsayo for holding while Figueroa suffered a cut on his left eye lid. In the tenth round Figueroa continued a body attack hurting Magsayo throughout the round. In the eleventh round again Magsayo was deducted a point by referee Taylor for holding. At the bell both were throwing punches.
In the twelfth and final round Figueroa had Magsayo in trouble with a solid body attack with both landing punches at the bell.
Scores were 117-109 twice and 118-108 as did this writer.
Middle WBC No 9 ranked Amilcar “Pety” Vital, 16-1 (12), #150, of Montevideo, URG, and Las Vegas, NV, was stopped by southpaw Elijah Garcia, 14-0 (12), #158.6, of Phoenix, AZ, at 2:17 of round four of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the first three rounds was very competitive by both fighters. In the second round the fight heated up with Garcia having Vidal against the ropes for the most part with Vidal scoring well having blood from the mouth of Garcia. In the fourth round Garcia landed a dozen unanswered punches finally dropping Vidal as Referee Jack Reiss waved it off. It was a very impressive performance by Garcia.
Super Light Enriko “Gudan” Gogokhia, 13-1-2 (8), #143, of Zugdidi, GEO, and Woodland Hills, CA, lost to Samuel “Tsunami” Teah, 19-4-1 (8), #141.6, of Monrovia, LIB, and Philadelphia, PA, over 10 rounds.
In the first round Teah scored a knockdown. Scores were 79-72 and 78-73 twice.
Former Light Middle champ now middle Jarrett “Swift” Hurd, 24-3 (16), #159.2, of Accokeek, MD, was stopped by Armando “Toro” Resendiz, 14-1 (10), #161, of Compostella, MEX, at 0:05 of the tenth round.
In the first round Resendiz battered Hurd throughout the round. In the second round the action went back and forth with Resendiz controlling the first two minutes while Hurd ended the final seconds putting Resendiz on the defense. In the third round the action continued with Hurd using an effective jab and Resendiz going to the body and head.
In the fourth round both fighters had their moments having the fans cheering on. Hurd came back well after Resendiz continued coming forward. In the sixth and seventh rounds Resendiz kept backing up Hurd with uppercuts inside who countered well but not enough to take the round.
In the eighth round Resendiz had Hurd against the ropes for most of the round drawing blood from the nose and mouth of Hurd. An overhand right from Resendiz rocked Hurd near the end of the round.
In the ninth round Hurd did well going to the body before Referee Ray Corona warned him for a low blow. Resendiz mostly went to the head in an action packed fight.
In the tenth and final round referee Corona took Hurd to the ring physician who halted it due to a very bad cut to the lip of Hurd.
Former Olympian Super Welter Terrell Gausha, 23-3-1 (11), #156.6, of Encino, CA, stopped Brandyn “Bad News” Lynch, 12-2-1 (9), #155.6, of L.A.at , CA, 0:50 of the ninth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the ninth round Gausha drove Lynch to the canvas forcing referee Jack Reiss to call a halt.
