Gervonta Davis fighting in January, Ryan Garcia likely opponent

By Jim Calfa: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis has revealed on social media this week that he’ll be fighting in January, but he’s not saying who his opponent will be.

Tank’s opponent is expected to be announced in December, and then the fight will be promoted to the hilt. Like all Tank’s fights nowadays, it’ll be on Showtime PPV.

Having all of Tank’s fights on pay-per-view has arguably stunted his career because he’s not been seen enough by casual boxing fans to build him into a huge star.

Of course, the soft match-making that’s done on Tank’s behalf has played a huge role in keeping him from becoming a mega-star as well.

The popular Instagram, Twitter & YouTube star Ryan Garcia is expected to be Tank’s opponent. Whether Ryan gets the fight will determine whether the networks can agree to share the fight.

Ryan is with DAZN, whereas Tank is with SHOWTIME, and it’s believed that they want to be the sole distributor of the fight, which is understandable given that it’s not a big enough one for it to be shared on two networks.

Both guys are popular, but they’ve not done enough with their careers to branch out to become stars in a real sense, thanks to the weak match-making that has been done by their promoters.

Tank’s best career wins:

  • Yuriorkis Gamboa
  • Isaac Cruz
  • Mario Barrios
  • Leo Santa Cruz – featherweight
  • Jose Pedraza
  • Rolly Romero

It’s troubling that Tank hasn’t fought better opposition than this during his career, but unfortunately, that’s how his promoters have chosen to guide him.

The way Tank struggled against Santa Cruz, Rolly, and Barrios,  it’s perhaps a good thing that Mayweather Promotions didn’t throw him into the deep end against good opposition because he’d likely lose.

There have been rumors that Tank is fighting 36-year-old Abner Mares next, but he’s denied that. We only hope that Tank’s opponent is better than Mares because he needs a major upgrade in opposition from the fighters he’s been facing during the last five years.

Ryan has been on a mission for the last couple of years to land the Tank Davis fight, and it’s become tiresome because his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions haven’t matched him against anyone that could show the fans that he deserves a title shot.

Hopefully, once this fight is over, Tank will start taking on the best at lightweight because his career seems like a gimmick to many boxing fans. He’s just fighting lesser guys and seemingly swerving opposition that could expose him or increase his popularity.
