By Vince Dwriter: In the fight game, some boxers need twenty-plus fights before they’re ready to enter the mainstream of competition, and others require approximately 10 to 15, but WBA Super middleweight (Regular) champion David Morrell Jr (7-0, 6 KOs) believes his time is now.
The 24-year-old Morrell will take another step towards proving he’s one of the elites in the division when he faces undefeated contender Aidos Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) on Saturday night, November 5, at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, live on Showtime Championship Boxing.
A product of Santa Clara, Cuba, Morrell currently resides in his adopted hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He’s a young, technically sound boxer who has an impressive skill set, and he’s on the verge of becoming a major force in the super middleweight division. Despite being in the early stages of his boxing career, Morrell has the composure of a seasoned veteran. He’s a heavy-handed fighter who likes to work on the inside and land sharp combinations.
In December 2021, Morrell faced a man who everybody assumed would be his first step-up type of test as he fought Alantez Fox, a ring veteran who came into the bout with a record of (28-2-1, 13 KOs). During the opening round of the fight, Morrell calmly walked Fox down and proceeded to consistently land hard, accurate shots.
After being knocked down in the fourth round, Fox was able to get up, but he was in serious trouble as Morrell continued to connect with a series of power shots, that is, until Fox’s corner threw in the towel to officially end the bout in the fourth round.
Six months later, Morrell scored his second consecutive fourth-round TKO victory when he dominated Kalvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson. Morrell looked extremely impressive, as he was out to prove that he’s ready to step in the ring with the highly regarded former two-time WBC champion and current undefeated super middleweight contender David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez.
Hopefully, the two will be able to face each other in the ring sometime in 2023, but for now, Morrell must handle his business on November 5 when he defends his (Regular) title against the WBA number one ranked contender. Morrell’s upcoming bout with Aidos Yerbossynuly is a risky fight because Yerbossynuly is an aggressive boxer who likes to stand in the pocket.
The November 5 clash between Morrell and Yerbossynuly has the potential to be a fan-friendly type of match due to the fact that both boxers are accustomed to coming forward, throwing combinations, and dictating the pace of the bout. They both share a common opponent, as Yerbossynuly knocked out Lennox Allen in September 2021, but Allen was able to stay on his feet and go the distance when he fought Morrell in August 2020.
David Morrell is a young gifted fighter who truly believes he deserves to be mentioned in the same conversation as David Benavidez and Caleb Plant. A formidable performance on Saturday night could elevate Morrell’s name into the elite grouping or, at the very least, help Morrell get one step closer.
