Spence vs. Crawford happening “Further down the future” says Floyd Mayweather Jr

By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr gave fans the bad news on Friday, saying that the Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford fight won’t happen until “further down the future.”

Mayweather says he’s been talking to Al Haymon of PBC, and he knows what’s happening with the Spence-Crawford undisputed welterweight fight, and it’s “not happening.”

Before Mayweather quickly changed the subject to his career, he told Fighthype that whoever told the fans that the Spence vs. Crawford fight was happening soon got it dead wrong.

For the record, it was Mike Coppinger of ESPN that broke the news of the Spence-Crawford fight potentially taking place before the end of the year.

If the fight isn’t happening this year, it might not ever happen. Spence’s IBF mandatory against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is expected to be ordered soon, and that’s a tougher fight on paper than the 35-year-old Crawford.

Boots (29-0, 27 KOs) is bigger, stronger, and far younger than Crawford, and he could defeat Spence if that fight happens next. PBC needs to keep in mind what Spence is up against, with the IBF likely to order him to defend against Boots Ennis if he elects to stay at 147 for much longer.

If the Crawford fight is going to be delayed a year or two, Spence might as well vacate his IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight titles and move up to 154, where he doesn’t need to worry about the dangerous Boots Ennis.

“Somebody threw it out there, I don’t know who threw it out there, but I’m not here to throw anybody under the bus,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr to Fight Hub TV about the Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford fight.

“They keep saying this fight is going to happen, and once again, this fight may happen, but further down the future. They said the fight was happening in November. November 19th, we’ll say, a month away, a little over a month away, six weeks, whatever.

Crawford is 35 years old, and Spence is 32. It might not be a good idea for PBC to let this fight marinate because one or both could get beaten. Mayweather could dodge defeats late in his career, but he did it by swerving the risky fights and picking guys like Canelo Alvarez before he got really good.

“As of right now, the Spence and Crawford fight is not happening,” said Mayweather.
