“There were no robberies” in Canelo vs. Golovkin 1 & 2 says Eddie Hearn

By Sam Volz: Eddie Hearn surprisingly says there were “no robberies” in the first two Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin fights.

Hearn says he felt that the first Canelo-Golovkin fight deserved to be a draw in 2017, and he saw Canelo winning the second one in 2018.

In other words, Hearn agrees with the judges that scored the first fight a 12 round draw, which many fans totally disagreed with.

Had Golovkin won both fights, his career trajectory would likely be much different than it turned out.

For starters, Golovkin would have made more money for the rematch in 2018 against Canelo, and he likely would have gotten a lot of offers for endorsement deals.

The trilogy fight against Canelo would have come a lot sooner than 2022 if Golovkin had won the first two fights, as the Mexican star would have pushed hard to face him as early as December 2018.

Boxing fans largely see the first fight as a clear victory by Golovkin, and many feel that he deserved to get the decision by eight rounds to four.

“Certainly both fights were very close, and we know that, but also at the same time, Gennadiy Golovkin believes he won those two fights,” said Eddie Hearn to Secondsout about the two Canelo vs. Golovkin fights from 2017 and 2018.

“Canelo Alvarez feels he won those two fights. Ultimately, it’s irrelevant now. The third fight is upon us, and both want to make sure they’re triumphant on Saturday,” Hearn continued.

“Sometimes decisions go your way, and sometimes they don’t,” said Hearn when asked how Golovkin’s career would have gone had he been given the victory in the two fights with Canelo in terms of money.

One thing is for sure; there were no robberies in those fights. I feel that Canelo Alvarez won the second fight. I thought the first fight was very, very close. It could have gone either way.

“Sometimes when you’re in an arena, and it’s full of Mexican Canelo fans, if it’s on a knife edge, he’ll get the decision. That’s just the way boxing goes, but both fights were very close.

“Would that have changed the trajectory [of GGG’s career]? I don’t know. There might have been a trilogy sooner.

“One thing I don’t agree with is when people say, ‘Canelo has been waiting, sitting out for the rematch.’ “Look at who he’s boxed. He went and unified the super middleweight division in one year,” said Hearn.
