Canelo Alvarez can’t afford to lose to Gennadiy Golovkin

By Craig Daly: Canelo Alvarez is in a position where he cannot afford to lose to his old nemesis Gennadiy Golovkin this Saturday night.

Canelo has already been booted off the #1 pound-for-pound list after a loss to Dmitry Bivol last May.

Another defeat at the hands of Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) would be catastrophic for the career of the 32-year-old former four-division world champion Canelo.

Losing to the 40-year-old Golovkin isn’t something that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) would be able to brush under the rug, as he attempted to do after his loss to Bivol.

Boxing fans aren’t going to believe another excuse from Canelo about something going wrong during training camp. If Canelo loses to Golovkin, he’s going to need to own that loss and not try and come up with a convenient alibi.

“Canelo vs. Gennadiy Golovkin, the war to settle the score, the trilogy completing fight for two of the biggest stars of this generation,” said Chris Mannix to DAZN’s JABs.

“Canelo enters this fight as a significant favorite, but both guys have a lot on the line, not the least of which getting a clear win after two razor-close fights. Who is this fight more important for, Canelo or GGG?”

Canelo has more at stake in this fight. He has to prove and show to the boxing fans, the haters, the critics, everybody, that he’s still a pound-for-pound talent,” said Sergio Mora.

“He’s not the #1; he’s not the head honcho in the pound-for-pound list anymore. He got booted off from the top three. So now he needs to prove that he’s still the goods, and he needs to do it against Golovkin. Somebody that he hasn’t beaten clearly.

“This bitter rivalry goes back all the way to 2017. We still don’t have a clear winner here. A split decision, majority draw, we need a clear decision here, and I think we’re going to get it this time around.

“Not only because they’re bitter rivals and they know each other well, and they’re familiar with each other’s power and everything else, but it’s time. Whenever you do something over and over, you’re bound to find a way.

‘In boxing, that way is a knockout. In every great trilogy, we get to see knockouts. We’re going to get something fantastic for the fans, and we’re finally going to finish this trilogy and put it behind us,” said Mora.
