By Huck Allen: Danny Garcia wants all the top dogs at 154 to capture all the belts in the weight class. Undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo is on Danny’s hit list, and he could be challenging him soon for his four titles.
The former two-division world champion Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs) will be making his debut at junior middleweight next month against Jose Benavidez Jr. on July 30th on Showtime at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Garcia, 34, will be fighting for the first time since his close 12-round unanimous decision defeat against Errol Spence Jr. nearly two years ago in December 2020.
Spence’s high work rate was the difference in that fight, as Danny couldn’t quite match the nonstop punches the unbeaten champion threw that night.
Benavidez (27-1-1, 18 KOs) is coming off a disappointing 10-round draw against Francisco Emanuel Torres last November.
That was a guy that Benavidez would have likely easily handed if he was sharp, but he hadn’t fought in three years since his 12th-round knockout loss to Terence Crawford in 2018.
“I feel great and looking good. It’s the Danny Garcia show, another day another dollar. I can’t complain,” said Danny Garcia to Fighthype about his upcoming July 30th match against Jose Benavidez Jr.
“I got to best this Benavidez kid, and then we’re off to bigger & better things. I’m doing like I always took my whole career, taking one fight at a time,” Danny Garcia continued.
“It’s not about size. It’s about skills, heart & determination, and how bad you want it,” Danny said when told that some boxing fans believe he’s too small to compete at 154. “I believe in myself, and that’s all it takes.
“You could be the biggest guy in the world, but if I’m smart and I believe in myself more and I want it more, I can take it from you. That’s all it’s about believing in yourself.
“Definitely, we definitely want to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s why we do this, to put our names in the history books. That’s why I’m going up to 154 because I want to be a legend, I want to be a guy that’s fearless. A person that’s not afraid to fail, takes risks.
“No risk, no reward. That’s been me my whole career. We always want to do bigger & better things. That’s why we’re doing this. Not because we have to because we want to. It’s a big difference.
“I just want to do one fight at a time, what fight at a time. I got to get back to the Danny Garcia that was worried about who’s in front of me. I can’t worry about somebody I’m not even fighting.
“That’s pointless. Of course, name-dropping is always good for promotion. It brings more eyes and all that, but they already know I’m coming for the top spot,” said Danny.
