By Dan Ambrose: Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin will launch a small two-city tour next week to promote their September 17th trilogy fight on DAZN pay-per-view and will be visiting New York and Los Angeles.
Next Friday, June 24th, Canelo-Golovkin will be in Hollywood, Florida, for a press conference, and then on Monday, June 27th, the two will wrap up their short mini-tour in New York.
It’s a short tour, but the event’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, are likely counting on fans not needing a more extended tour to get them excited at seeing the undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) and Golovkin meet for their trilogy.
The dark cloud surrounding the Canelo-Golovkin III fight is the two controversial results from the first two contests between the two, which saw Alvarez dodge two defeats with questionable scoring. Both matches took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Another big negative about the trilogy is that it’s coming right after a one-sided defeat by Canelo against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7th. Canelo was trounced by the more talented Bivol, who beat him in every facet of the game, making the Mexican star look like an amateur.
After the fight, Canelo said that he would face Bivol in a rematch, which sounded crazy then. Still, it was admirable that the former four-division world champion was willing to take on his conqueror in an immediate second fight.
Sadly, instead of Canelo backing up his words by going through with the rematch with Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs), he chose what many boxing fans felt was the easier route by choosing to fight the 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs), who has seen better days and has fought only four times since 2018.
Ideally, it would have looked more courageous on Canelo’s part if he’d shown conviction by choosing to return to the battlefield with a better game plan to use against Bivol.
Even if Canelo lost again, the fans would at least respect him for following through with his words about taking the rematch.
Bradley predicts a stoppage win for Canelo over GGG
“Canelo just lost. He was the pound-for-pound guy. You don’t understand what that does to a fighter with so much pride like Canelo,” said Tim Bradley to Fighthype, talking about Alvarez’s recent loss to Dmitry Bivol.
“Canelo is going back to the drawing board. ‘I got to go back to what I used to do.’ He’s going to be different. This fight with Bivol is going to make him better, it’s going to make him stronger mentally, and it’s going to improve his game.
“I expect a better Canelo when he fights GGG, and I say again, he’s going to stop him. If he doesn’t stop him, he’s going to hurt him badly,” said Bradley.
