By Max Schramm: Shawn Porter rates Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford’s power highly. He feels that Spence (29-0, 23 KOs) has the type of thudding power that wears you down slowly because of the brutal force of the shots.
What makes Spence’s power even more lethal is that he has a high punch output to go with it, and he won’t stop throwing. Getting hit by the heavy-handed Spence repeatedly throughout a fight is hard for any fighter, including Crawford.
For his part, Porter sees Crawford as having whip-like power on his punches that snap your head back.
Porter is looking forward to the undisputed welterweight clash between IBF/WBA/WBC champion Spence Jr. and WBO champion Crawford coming up this year.
According to Stephen Espinoza of Showtime, the Spence vs. Crawford fight is two-thirds done, and hopefully, they can get it over the line.
“Spence is more of a thud and is going to wear you down, and Spence obviously has that punch where he can connect, and you’re out,” said Shawn Porter to K.O. Artist Sports when asked about Errol Spence’s power in comparison to Terence Crawford’s.
It might prove difficult for Spence to land his hard shots against Crawford because he’s defensive skilled, and will be on his bike to keep from getting hit.
“Even if he connects and you’re not out, he’s going to keep coming and he’s going to hit you,” said Porter. “I kind of describe Terence’s power as more of a whip because he throws his power with speed. It coins the phrase, ‘Speed makes power.’
“So his power is kind of disguised because of his speed, which I think makes it more of a whip. It’s not going to take a long time to get there, it’s going to get there fast and it’s going to pop you,” said Porter.
“Yeah, that’s kind of what I mean by whip and thud. I’m not saying that Errol is slow, but his stuff is going to wear you down. Through the course of rounds, it’s going to wear you down.
“With Terence, it kind of comes out of nowhere, and it’s because of the speed. The most intriguing thing about this fight is people think about the power, they think it’s because they get stronger as the fight goes on.
“They overlook that both of these guys have become very masterful at range and distance,” Porter said of Spence & Crawford. “Both of these guys figure out where they want to go to work, and then they go to work from there.
“So in this fight where both guys are going to have to impose their will and find where they want this fight to be ultimately fought, I think that’s interesting because I think both guys are very good overall.
“If anything, you can say that Errol works a little bit better on the inside than Terence does, but Terence is a good worker on the inside.
“If Terence says, ‘I want the fight to be here [on the outside],’ and Errol says, ‘Okay,’ and we get a fight from here, that’s really interesting. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
“If Errol wants to fight on the outside, I think Terence is going to try to push it to the inside and vice versa. This is the epitome of styles make fights.
“This is the first time I’ve talked about it, and I’m kind of giddy right now. We all know it’s special. The perfect venue for this fight is Allegiant Stadium [in Las Vegas].
“It’s the perfect venue for this fight,” said Porter about wanting the Spence vs. Crawford fight to take place at the huge Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
