Coming up on April 23rd at Wembley Stadium, in a bout that will be televised in the US on ESPN+ PPV, Tyson Fury will defend the lineal heavyweight championship along with his WBC belt against Dillian Whyte.

Both Fury and Whyte have boxed twice since the beginning of 2020. Since then, Whyte had a pair of matches against Alexander Povetkin and Fury had a pair of fights against Deontay Wilder to close out their thoroughly entertaining trilogy. So neither guy has been especially active the past two years, and neither guy is a spring chicken.

Fury won his second and third bouts to close out his trilogy against Deontay Wilder. He dominated and stopped him in their long awaited rematch back in February 2020, and he won another stoppage victory in a highly dramatic war against Wilder last October. Meanwhile, Whyte split his 2 fight series with Povetkin, losing by stoppage in their first fight back in August 2020, and avenging that devastating loss with a stoppage victory of his own in their rematch last March.

Whyte will be receiving his first opportunity to compete for a major world title, and a lot of fans believe this chance is long overdue. Whyte has been a fixture inside the Top 10 for a number of years now, and he has faced a number of fellow top contenders during that stretch with mixed success. On the other hand, Fury earned the heavyweight world championship when he defeated long reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko all the way back in November 2015, and he also ended the reign of Deontay Wilder when he won this era’s defining heavyweight trilogy.
