Is 168 pounds too much for Gennady Golovkin at age 40 against his former conqueror Canelo Alvarez?

Last Saturday from Siatama, Japan, in a middleweight championship contest that was broadcast on the relatively new streaming app service known as DAZN, Gennady Golovkin put his IBF middleweight championship on the line against WBA super middleweight champion Ryota Murata.

This actually wound up being a helluva nice scrap, that was essentially a tactical slugfest that saw both champions landing and absorbing an awful lot of hard flush punches. Both guys came to fight, and at times Golovkin was looking a little slow and a little old, but a lot of that may have just been a matter of shaking off a little ring rust. Golovkin ultimately broke Murata down both physically and mentally before ultimately dropping him in round 9, at which point Murata’s corner had thrown in the towel.

With the victory Golovkin is now the unified IBF/WBA middleweight champion, and this win theoretically puts him in line for a 3rd bout against the only man who beat him, Canelo Alvarez. Triple G did his part, and now Canelo has an upcoming match against Dmirty Bivol on May 7th. Assuming Canelo is victorious, and perhaps even if he is not, that would pave the way to a 3rd fight between Canelo and Golovkin that would take place at 168, where Canelo is now the reigning undisputed WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF super middleweight champion. Canelo is the only undisputed super middleweight champion in boxing history, and he is 1 of just 6 boxers to ever become undisputed in any weight class during the modern 4 belt era.

But the big question remains: Is 168 pounds too much for Gennady Golovkin at age 40 against his former conqueror Canelo Alvarez?

This edition of Rummy’s Corner will attempt to answer that question while providing some thoughts on what Canelo and Golovkin have done since they last met all the way back in September 2018. For one man’s opinion on this topic, please watch and enjoy the video.
