By Barry Holbrook: In a move that hopefully could shed light on what happened with the scoring for Jack Catterall’s loss to undisputed light welterweight champion Josh Taylor for their fight on February 26th, the results have been referred to the police by the Speaker of the House of Commons.

According to the MailSport, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, The Speaker of the House of Commons, has sent a letter to the police to investigate what happened with Jack Catterall’s defeat against 31-year-old Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

The judges give the home fighter Taylor a 12 round split decision victory over Catterall on the night by the following scores:

  • Taylor – 114-111 [Ian John-Lewis]
  • Taylor – 113-112 [Victor Loughlin]
  • Catterall – 113-112 [Howard Foster]

In addition to the potential police investigation over the Taylor – Catterall fight, the British Boxing Board of Control are conducting their investigation.

Taylor says it’s too difficult for him to “safely” make the 140-lb limit any longer, so he’s moving up in weight to 147. He would be willing to entertain the idea of a rematch with Catterall at welterweight, albeit minus his four 140-lb straps.

Those are the ones that Catterall wants and needs to become a star in the sport and to make millions potentially.

While some boxing fans might think it’s laughable that the fight results have been referred to the police, too many fans have criticized the controversial scoring for it to be ignored and brushed aside.

As promoter Eddie Hearn pointed out, the fight results prevented Catterall from making life-changing money as the new undisputed light welterweight champion. We could be talking millions that Catterall would make as the IBF/WBA/WBO/WBC 140-lb champion.

“Everyone is disgusted by what’s happened – it brings the sport into disrepute,” Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Catterall’s MP in Chorley, said to Sportsmail. “I have to question why the judges got it so wrong? I have already sent a letter to the police.

“I have spoken to Nadine Dorries, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Minister for Sport, Nigel Huddleston – they are both looking into this.

“I also believe that something seriously went on here – whether it was undue influence, one must question why?”

It’s unclear what the outcome of the police investigation of the Taylor vs. Catterall results will be if any. Whether a rematch will be ordered remains to be seen.

Taylor says he feels Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) rates a rematch, and he could entertain one as such, but he’s not sure when that can happen, and it would be at a catchweight in the 147-lb division without his four titles being on the line.

In other words, it would just be a regular fight with nothing at stake other than the chance for Catterall to avenge his defeat.

“We’ll see what happens down the line – we can have a fight again with Jack, why not. I’m certainly open to it,” said Taylor to Sky Sports News.

Most likely at a catchweight. I can’t make the weight anymore safely. I’m keen for a rematch,” said Josh.
