David Benavidez & Caleb Plant war of words continues

By Sean Jones: David Benavidez and Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant continued their war of words on Sunday, firing shots back and forth on social media in what could be leading to a mega-fight between them in September. According to David’s dad, Jose Benavidez Sr, negotiations have already started.

Surprisingly, Caleb seems to be ready to face Benavidez rather than swerve him the way Canelo Alvarez has been doing for the last four years.

That’s a daring move for the 29-year-old former IBF super middleweight champion Plant, but it’s a sign that he wants to get right back to the top rather than burning through two or three years taking confidence-booster fights.

If Plant takes the fight with Benavidez, 25, he’s going to make Canelo look weak & afraid because he’s wanted no part of fighting him despite the frequent callouts, and the many boxing fans pushing for that match.

Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) unleashed the dogs of war last Thursday when he was asked on social media who would win in a fight between him and the former two-time WBC super middleweight champion Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs). Rather than ignoring the question, Plant said this:

Plant: “Fatboy can’t f*** with me.”

That’s all it took for things to escalate with Benavidez tearing into the former IBF super middleweight champion Plant, saying:

Benavidez: “This fat boy will knock yo b*** a** out worse than Canelo, sweetheart @CalebPlant.”

Plant: “When @benavidez300 said he’s the goat he meant a billy goat. FATBOY!”

Benavidez: “Mr. sweet cheeks himself loves to get humbled 😂😂😂 I think he likes the way that Canvas tastes. He gonna see it again real soon @calebplant.:

If Benavidez takes the fight with Plant in September, that’s going to delay his talked about match-up against Demetrius Andrade. Those two were supposed to fight in a WBO 168-lb title eliminator, as long as Andrade beat Zach Parker for the interim title.

Benavidez vs. Plant is a bigger fight than a match against Andrade. Ideally, the Benavidez-Plant winner can always fight Andrade if they can’t get a shot against Canelo straightaway.

Sean Jones doesn’t see Canelo wanting any part of Benavidez, no matter if he beats Plant and Andrade in back-to-back fights. He’s too dangerous.

For Plant, fighting Benavidez is the best move because if he beats him, it might perk Canelo’s interest to revisit that fight.

If nothing else, Plant would make a match between him and Jermall Charlo a far bigger one than if he were to face him right now coming off a loss to Canelo.
