Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha possible for Charlo vs. Castano II card on March 19th

By Jack Tiernan: #1 WBO ranked 154-lb contender Tim Tszyu and Terrell Gausha have a fight in the works to be added to the undercard of the Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano II card on March 19th. The plan is for the winner of the Tszyu vs. Gausha fight to battle the Charlo – Castano 2 victor.

‘Soul Taker’ Tszyu (20-0, 15 KOs) is the mandatory for WBO junior middleweight champion Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs) and he’s waiting for the smoke to clear from his rematch with IBF, WBA & WBC champion Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs).

This is a tough fight for Tszyu in taking on 2012 Olympian Gausha (22-2-1, 11 KOs), as the American has a lot of experience in the amateurs and the pro ranks.  Gausha has shared the ring with these fighters:

  • Erislandy Lara – UD 12 loss
  • Austin Trout – draw 12
  • Erickson Lubin – UD 12 loss
  • Jamontay Clark
  • Joey Hernandez
  • Orlando Lara

Gausha, 34, won’t be an easy task for Tszyu to defeat, considering he’s never been knocked out before during his ten-year professional career and he has top-notch boxing skills.

The only reason Gausha isn’t ranked in the top 15 is because of his two recent defeats at the hands of former WBA 154-lb champion Erislandy Lara and Erickson Lubinson. Gausha went the 12 round distance in both of those fights but came up short on the judges’ scorecards.

Tszyu, the son of the famous former IBF/WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu, would be challenging for the world title now against Castano if not for the controversial 12 round draw between the WBO 154lb champion from Argentina and IBF/WBA/WBC champion Jermell last July in San Antonio, Texas.

Castano, 32, found out the hard way how difficult it is to defeat the Texan Charlo on his home turf in Texas in 2021.

Tszyu is coming off a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision win over the always tough former junior middleweight world title challenger Takeshi Inoue on November 17th in Sydney, Australia.

The 32-year-old Inoue showed an iron chin and took Tszyu’s best shots to survive the full 12 round distance, but he was totally overmatched. The scores were: 120-107, 119-108, and 120-107.

For Inoue, you can argue that it was a moral victory that he was able to see the final bell in the 12th because he snapped Tszyu’s consecutive knockout streak.

Heading into the contest, Tszyu had stopped his last five opponents since 2019, and it was believed that he would knockout Inoue as well but he couldn’t do it.

If Jermell Charlo defeats Castano in their rematch on March 19th, it’s going to be interesting to see if the American defends his four titles against Tszyu.

In the past, Charlo has seemed cool to the idea of defending against Tszyu for some reason. If Jermell chooses not to face the WBO mandatory Tszyu, he’ll need to vacate that title to avoid being stripped by the sanctioning body.
