John Fury reacts to Whyte signing contract for Tyson fight

By Jim Calfa: John Fury congratulated Dillian Whyte today for signing the contract to face his son WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in their fight on April 23rd.

John is pleased that Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) didn’t decide on backing out of the fight due to his unhappiness with the money that he’ll be taking.

Dillian didn’t get the 55/45 purse split that he’d hoped for, but Team Fury justified the 80/20 split going by what Tyson had made for his last fight against Deontay Wilder.

Like a lot of boxing fans, John appears to be relieved that Whyte, 34, decided to sign the contract, as it would have been a disappointment had he backed out.

According to John, he expects it to be an “epic” fight, and he’s giving the WBC mandatory challenger Whyte a “puncher’s chance” of winning.

Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) has already started training, and earlier today he said he’ll be offline for the next 8 1/2 weeks while he prepares for his title defense against Whyte.

John Fury congratulates Dillian

“Just a quickie to congratulate Dillian Whyte on signing the contract. He stepped up to the plate and proved to be the man that I thought he was,” said John Fury to iFL TV.

“No disrespect to him in any way, shape, or form. It’s going to be a great epic fight. Tyson is not taking anybody lightly. He’s going to train like a demon for this like anybody else because everybody has got a puncher’s chance.

“He’s a big strong lad, Dillian Whyte, and this is the first time I’ve been involved in a few years. I’m going to be there for eight weeks with Tyson, making sure things are in order, getting all the right things in the right places.

“It’s not going to happen again in Britain for some time, so let’s enjoy it all. The press conference is going to be epic. You know what I’m like. Front foot all the way.

“The same with all the other family members. It’s there to be enjoyed, and I’ll make it so you can enjoy it. So stay tuned, and like I said, well done, Dillian Whyte.

It’s made you life-changing money because I’d do it for a lot less than that. I’d do it for hundreds of pounds, not millions, but that’s me. I’m not a dog in the road. I’m not Dillian Whyte. The man has worked hard for his #1 position.

“He’s got his chance that he’s always wanted. I knew deep down inside that he wouldn’t waste his chance, but I’m happy that Eddie Hearn’s sick because it’s not gone the way that he wanted it to go.

“I can see that, he’s making a ton of excuses, but I know deep down inside, he wanted Dillian Whyte to do something else with him. Listen, he’s shown to be his own man.

“Good luck to you, Dillian Whyte. Train hard because Tyson is doing the same thing. May the best man win. Good luck,” said John Fury.
