Boxing Results: Lawrence Okolie Defeated Michal Cieslak in London, UK!

By Ken Hissner: At the O2 Arena, Greenwich, London, UK, Sunday over DAZN Eddie Hearn (Matchroom Boxing) presented in the Main Event WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Lawrence “The Sauce” Okolie of London, UK, defended against No. 4 ranked Michal Cieslak of Poland, with a decision scoring a pair of knockdowns in an overall sloppy match.

In the Main Event WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Lawrence “The Sauce” Okolie, 18-0 (14), #199.4, of Hackney, London, UK, defeated southpaw Michal Cieslak, 21-2 (15), #199.6, of Radom, Poland, over 12 rounds.

In the first round, Okolie landed a hard right on the chin, driving Cieslak into the ropes, or it would have been a knockdown. In the fifth, Okolie rocked Cieslak with a massive right to the ear, causing blood to come out, flooring him to a knee for an 8-count by referee Michael Alexander.

From the sixth through the ninth rounds, Okolie had the better of Cieslak, who held his own but not enough to get the majority of the rounds for the most part.

Halfway through the tenth round, a right from Okolie rocked Cieslak. In the twelfth and final rounds final twenty seconds, Cieslak landed a solid left on the chin when inside, having Okolie dancing away with both falling into a clinch prior to the
bell.

Scores were 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112.

Featherweight No. 9 WBC ranked Karim Guefri, 30-6 (9), #125, of Manosque, France, was knocked out by WBA No. 6 and IBF No. 8 ranked Jordan “The Thrill” Gill, 27-1-1 (8), #126, of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, UK, at 2:59 of the ninth round of a scheduled ten rounds.

In the first four rounds, it was back and forth with Guefri was well ahead, outscoring Gill. In the fifth and sixth, Gill fought his way back well but not quite enough to take the rounds.

In the seventh round, Guefri dropped Gill to the canvas for an 8-count. Then in his follow-up barrage, both fighters fell awkwardly to the canvas with the head of Gill rammed to the canvas. In the ninth round, Guefri looked like he was on his way to a victory until Gill suddenly laid him out with a right hand during both, mixing it up in the final seconds of the round, causing referee Thomas Walser to immediately wave it off.

Middleweight Anthony “The Machine” Fowler, 16-2 (12), #163, of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK, defeated Lukasz “Grubby” Maciec, 27-4-1 (5), #163, of Lublin, Poland, over ten rounds.

In the first three rounds, Fowler used a good right off of a jab against the tough Maciec. In the fourth round, Maciec had a small cut on his left eyebrow. He landed a hard right on the chin of Fowler in the final minute.

From the fifth through the eighth round, Fowler took all but the seventh. In the ninth round, a solid right uppercut got the attention of Maciec. In the tenth and final round, the durable Maciec never stopped coming back when pressed but too little too late.

Scores were 99-93, 99-92, and 99-91. The referee was Bob Williams.
Heavyweight Fabio Wardley, 12-0 (11), #236, of Ipswich, Suffolk, UK, Daniel “The Mountain” Martz, 20-9-2 (17), #266, of Clarksburg, WV, at 1:37 of the second round of a scheduled ten rounds.

In the second round, Wardley scored a pair of knockdowns, with the second a left hook on the right ear, and down went Martz holding his ear and shaking his head, causing the stoppage by the referee Lee Every.

2021 Olympic Gold Medalist Galal Yafai, 1-0 (1), #111.5, of Birmingham, West Midlands, UK, stopped Carlos “Tigre de Santa Julia” Vado Bautista, 10-4-1 (3), #109.9, of Mexico City, MEX, at 2:11 in the fifth round of a scheduled ten games, for the vacant WBC International Super Flyweight title.

In the first four rounds, it was all Yafai outworking and out landing Bautista. In the fifth round, a three-punch combination dropped Bautista for an 8-count. His right eye was partially closed. Upon getting up, Bautista’s corner threw in the towel. The referee was Mark Lyson.

Heavyweight southpaw WBO No. 11 and IBF No. 12 ranked Demsey McKean, 21-0 (13), #246, of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, defeated Ariel “Chiquito” Esteban Bracomonte, 11-7 (6), #293, of LaCumbre, Cordoba, ARG, over eight rounds.

In the first four rounds, McKean easily got the best of Bracomonte, keeping him on the defense. In the final four rounds, McKean continued outworking the defense-minded Bracomonte, who seemed to want to go the distance with little offense in return.
Referee Lee Every scored it 80-72.

Lightweight Campbell “The Hurricane” Hatton, 6-0 (2), #136 ¼, of Hyde, Cheshire, UK, stopped Joe Ducker, 9-9-2 (2), #136 ½, of Leicestershire, UK, at 2:23 of the sixth round of a scheduled 6.
In the first two rounds, Campbell, the aggressor, outworked Ducker.

In the third round, near the midway point, Campbell hurt Ducker
with a flurry of punches driving him into a corner. In the fifth round, Ducker suffered a cut on his right eyebrow from a right of Campbell’s. In the sixth and final round, with half a minute to go, a hard right from Campbell rocked Decker, causing referee Chas Coakley to call a halt.

Hatton, the son of former world champion Ricky Hatton, improves with each fight with little amateur background.

Cruiserweight 2020 Olympian Cheavon Clarke, 1-0 (0), #199 ½, of Jamaica and Gravsend, Kent, UK, knocked out Toni Visic, 20-30-2 (5), #199, of Split, Croatia, at 2:01 of the second round of a scheduled 6.

In the first round, Clarke scored a knockdown with a body shot. In the second round, a right to the head from Clarke on the chin knocked Visic out with referee Lee Every not needing a count waving it off.

Light Heavyweight southpaw John “The Gentleman” Hedges, 5-0 (1), #183 ½, of Takeley, Essex, UK, stopped Aleksander Nagolski, 2-2 (1), #182 ¼, of Bytom, Poland, at 0:38 of the fourth round of a 6.

In the first three rounds, Hedges outscored Nagolski, who was on the defense. In the fourth referee, Chas Coakley called a halt due to Nagolski not being able to continue from a Hedges flurry of punches having him out on his feet.
