By Mark Eisner: In a surprising upset, huge underdog George Kambsoso Jr. (20-0, 10 KOs) outsmarted IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez in defeating him by a 12 round split decision on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Many of the rounds were close. Although Kambosos landed more shots, he lacked power in comparison to Teofimo’s shots. Kambosos did a lot of tying up and moving around to keep Teofimo from getting his shots off.

The scores were 115-112, 115-111 for Kambosos Jr, and 114-113 for Teofimo. Boxing News 24 scored it 115-112 for Kambosos.

Kambosos Jr. knocked Teofimo down with a right hand in the first round. In the 10th, Teofimo knocked Kambosos down with a right to the head.

Teofimo suffered a bloody nose in the ninth and was cut badly over his left eye in the 11th. Kambosos suffered a cut over his left eye in the ninth.

Boxing News 24 will be giving live update results of the fight card as it takes place tonight below.

  • Kenichi Ogawa (26-1-1, 18 KOs) defeated Azinga Fuzile (15-2, 9 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant IBF super featherweight title. Ogawa, 33, dropped Fuzile once in the fifth round from a scorching right hand and twice more in the 12th. Somehow, the 25-year-old South African Fuzile made it out of the 12th without getting stopped. Fuzile was cut over his right eye in the tenth round and suffered another cut over his left eye in the eleventh round. The scores were 115-110, 115-110, and 114-111 for Ogawa. Boxing News 24 scored it for Ogawa 115-110. 127 of 319 shots for a 40 percent connect percentage for Ogawa.
  • Undefeated featherweight prospect Raymond Ford (10-0-1, 6 KOs) looked good in defeating a tough Felix Caraballo (13-4-2, 9 KOs) by an eighth round referee stoppage. The 22-year-old Ford opened up with a flurry of shots in the eighth round, resulting in the referee Ricky Gonzalez stepping in to stop the contest with the 34-year-old Puerto Rican Caraballo still on his feet. The time of the stoppage was at 2:10 of the eighth round. Caraballo made the fight interesting with his flurries to the body that he was landing late in each round. Each time it seemed like Caraballo was on the verge of being stopped by the sharpshooter Ford, he would come alive with a storm of body and headshots late. Like in his eight round draw against Aaron Perez two fights ago, the 22-year-old Ford made the mistake of backing up against the ropes and covering up. Ford has got to break that habit because he makes his fights tougher than they should be.
  • Undefeated two-time Olympic super heavyweight Zhilei Zhang (23-0-1, 18 KOs) destroyed journeyman Craig Lewis (14-5-1, 8 KOs) by a second round knockout. The 6’6″, 38-year-old Zhang knocked Lewis down two times in the second round to get the stoppage. The time of the stoppage was at 2:10 of the second.
  • Female super bantamweight prospect Ramla Ali (4-0) defeated Isela Vera (1-1) by a four round unanimous decision. The scores were 40-36, 40-36, and 40-36.
  • Female flyweight prospect Christina Cruz (2-0) defeated Maryguenn Vellinga (3-2-2, 2 KOs) by a six round unanimous decision. The scores were 59-55, 60-54, and 60-54.
  • Bantamweight prospect Anthony Herrera (1-0, 1 KOs) stopped Jonathan Tejeda (0-1) in the second round in his pro debut.

Preview:

Teofimo Lopez, 24, is the favorite, but that doesn’t mean anything because Kambosos Jr. is relentless, as we saw in his last fight against Lee Selby.

Kambosos confident of stopping Teofimo

“I’ve been here every single day, and June 19th, I was there, and every other day that was put out there until it got to the point where it became, ‘Come on, this is a joke. We need to fight; we’re sick and tired of this,'” said George Kambosos to The Volume on Boxing with Chris Mannix.

“As much as I want to kill this kid [Teofimo] and take him out, we’re fighters, and we have to prepare for a certain date. We’re happy it’s on Matchroom, and we’re excited for it and bring it on,” said Kambosos.

“I think my willpower at the moment and what I bring to the table, and what I believe in and my skillset and speed, my explosive power and the way I move, my defensive capabilities, I feel like I do everything better.

“It’s going to be shown on Saturday night,” said Kambosos. “Many don’t believe, but the most important thing is I believe, and I know I’ll win this fight.

“It only takes three and a half pounds of the right pressure on the right spot to put him to sleep. We have seen many times him get put to sleep in his sparring sessions.

“So I’m very confident of my speed and my explosive power to land the right shot. I’m ready for 12 rounds, as I said yesterday, victory by any means.

“That win against Lee Selby was an absolute masterclass,” said Kambosos on his close 12 round split decision win over 34-year-old former IBF super featherweight champion Selby.

“Selby is known for his boxing abilities. I boxed his head off, and I picked him apart in every round in his own hometown. So, we’re ready for whatever he brings, and we’re ready to win,” Kambosos said.

George ready for war

“Look, I’ll meet him head-on. If he wants to go to war, let’s go to war but the better for me,” said Kambosos when reminded that Teofimo wants to knock him out in the first.

“Well, we know that with anger, you make a lot of mistakes. If he wants that anger, bring it on, but we’re ready for whatever he brings. If he wants to box or if he wants to run, but I’m looking forward to meeting him head-on as well.

“Look, whatever way it goes. I’m ready for a firefight and ready for a boxing masterclass. I’m ready for whatever. Whatever he wants to do, I’m ready to match it and be better than him.

“There’s this big thing with undisputed and unified. I don’t get too involved in that. I’m just focused on beating this kid [Teofimo].

“It would mean the world because of all the hard years, earning it the hard way, going to the backyard of champions, going to the local club show.

“There was no big promoter behind me, no massive money behind me. Having to sell tickets, sell tables to get some commission to be able to get over to the U.S to do the hard training camps.

“All of a sudden, my door’s open and got to go with the legend Manny Pacquiao. That’s where it really took off, and I showed who I am in my last two fights, and I’m ready for this Saturday,” said Kambosos.

No worries about Teofimo not shaking hands

“All those hard years of blood, sweat & tears, away from my family, away from my kids. It’s one big ball of everything, and it’s about my legacy. I’m coming to win this fight, and I’m looking forward to it. It’s been a long time coming.

“Everything from the trainers to the sparring to the fights,” said Kambosos on what was the most important for him that shaped his career.

“Before I even hit the states, I had very solid fights in Australia against guys where I was a big underdog. I shouldn’t have won those fights, and I destroyed them, and I put a beating on them.

“Every bit of every day, and I’m getting better and better, and has impacted my career. I can’t pinpoint. The Manny Pacquiao sparring has been unbelievable.

“The last two fights I had, the experience I had was unbelievable. The sparring I had with Jose Ramirez, Ray Beltran, Sergey Lipinets, all these guys has put me at the level I am today.

“Everything from the gym to the trainers to the sparring to the fights, everything has made me the man I am today. It doesn’t really bother me.

“Shake hands, no shake hands. I come for the belts. That doesn’t bother me,” said Kambosos when told that Teofimo said he wouldn’t shake his hand after he beats him.

“Everything happens for a reason, and you never want to question anything. The way it’s meant to be is the way it’s happened, and look where we are,” said Kambosos.

George ready to rock

“We’re on DAZN and Matchroom; the promotion has been unbelievable,” said Kambosos. “You have people that know boxing as part of this. What a venue and to win all the belts. It’s unbelievable, and I’m very excited and very grateful to be in the position I’m in.

“After Saturday night, the world will be shocked, but I don’t be shocked because I’ve seen this for a very, very long time. I’ve dreamed about it, and I will make it a reality.

“If I had no arms, I’d still be rocking because that’s the kind of fighter I am. That’s how much it means to me.

“I’ll still be there winning the fight on Saturday. I’ll be there, and I’ll be ready like I always have been. It’s been an absolute pleasure,” said Kambosos.

George Kambosos Jr. is ready to pull off a big upset tonight against unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden in New York.

#1 IBF Kambosos (19-0, 10 KOs) has dreamed about this fight, and he feels he’s ready to beat Teofimo and take “those beautiful belts” back to his home country of Australia.
