By Charles Brun: Tyson Fury weighed in at a career-high of 277 lbs on Friday at the weigh-in for the title defense of his WBC heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder on Saturday night. The card will be televised on PPV.

For his part, former WBC champion Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) also weighed in at a career-high in coming in at 238 lbs for his trilogy match with Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Wilder should have come into the fight lighter in the low 220s because he’s going to need speed and endurance for him to move around the ring to prevent Fury from using his size to maul him.

Tyson’s weight could slow him down

Fury came in four lbs heavier than the 273 lbs he weighed in for his last fight against Wilder last year in February 2020. In that fight, Fury used his weight to lean on and rough up the then 231 lb Wilder en route to halting him in the seventh round.

It’s obvious that Fury thinks he’s going to be fighting a stationary Wilder, and that he’ll be able to use all that weight to work him over.

But it’s unlikely Fury is going to let Fury get near him to hold repeatedly as he did a year ago. Fury was clinching excessively in that fight and throwing rabbit punches. That’s not going to happen this time because Wilder will stay on the move and not let Fury have a sitting duck.

It could be a mistake on either of these fighters’ part to pack on extra weight because it’s likely to slow them both down, making it easier for them to get hit.

Although Fury packed on more weight for the fight, he didn’t look in better shape than he was 20 months ago for his rematch with Wilder.

It appears that Fury has eaten his way to 277 lbs rather than working his way, which could be bad for him if he’s too slow to get out of the way of Wilder’s sledgehammer right hand.

Other weights on Saturday’s Fury vs. Wilder III card:

  • Efe Ajagba 237 vs. Frank Sanchez 240
  • Robert Helenius 246 vs. Adam Kownacki 258
  • Jared Anderson 240 vs. Vladimir Tereshkin 256
  • Edgar Berlanga 168 vs. Marcelo Coceres 166.5

Of those fights, the more interesting ones are the Ejagba vs. Sanchez and Helenius vs. Kownacki matches. The others are mismatches.

John Fury says Tyson will make Wilder pay

“He beat him good last time, but I think he’ll have to do better this time,” said John Fury to Boxing Social. “The mindset Tyson is in with the things Wilder has been saying about him, discrediting what he’s doing with defamation of character.

“So Tyson is going to make him pay for all that. I can see that at the press conferences with the way he’s talking about him. Tyson has zero respect for him or his team.

“But like we say, be cautious about his power, but take his aim away, what’s he got? I’ll tell you what he’s got, nothing.

“He knows not to let his emotions get in the way of what he’s got to do. He’s got one thing on his mind to make him pay for what he said. He’s going to do it professionally.

“Execute the game plan and make him pay,” said Fury. “The greatest victory of them all is humiliating these people and stopping them.

“He has 90 different excuses and not one of them makes any sense. He’s been allowed to get away with it. I’d have had him in a court case, but that’s not Tyson.

“He wants to beat him, but he’ll do it intelligently. He’s a smart guy, Tyson. He’s not going to let his emotions get in the way of the job he has to do.

Deontay could start fast

“I think Wilder is going to come out of the blocks really quick,”  said John Fury. “I think he’s only got three rounds in him and he’s going to come out wild like his namesake.

“If he does that, he’s playing into Tyson’s hands. If he tries to work Tyson’s body, he’s in trouble.

“There’s no way in the world that Deontay Wilder can beat my son unless he gets a lucky punch. That’s all it’s going to be – a lucky punch.

“Tyson is going to take him into a dog fight into a place he’s never been before and he’s going to give him a severe beating up close and personal.

“It’s not going to be a pretty sight. It’s going to be a dogfight. I don’t see it being much of a boxing match.

“Wilder might try and make it that way, but Tyson won’t allow him to do that. Tyson will take him into a dogfight and smash him to pieces,” said Fury.
